Majority of Voters Want FBI Probe Into Liz Cheney

A new Rasmussen poll reveals a significant majority of American voters—57%—want the FBI to investigate former U.S. Representative Liz Cheney. The poll highlights growing public scrutiny over Cheney’s actions during her time on the controversial January 6 Select Committee, as accusations of misconduct and bias continue to emerge.

Liz Cheney, who lost her Wyoming House seat in a Republican primary in 2022, has remained a polarizing figure in U.S. politics. According to the Rasmussen Reports survey, only 40% of likely voters hold a favorable opinion of Cheney, while 42% view her unfavorably. Another 17% remain undecided.

The poll comes amid revelations about Cheney’s alleged behind-the-scenes actions during her tenure on the committee. Critics claim her conduct undermined the integrity of the investigation into the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot and unfairly targeted former President Donald Trump and his supporters.

Recent reports accuse Cheney of coaching Cassidy Hutchinson, a key witness during the January 6 hearings. Hutchinson made dramatic claims about Trump’s behavior on the day of the Capitol riot, including an allegation that he tried to grab the steering wheel of the presidential vehicle. These claims have since been widely disputed, with the limo driver reportedly eager to testify and debunk Hutchinson’s account—a move Cheney allegedly blocked.

Critics argue Cheney’s actions were part of a broader effort to shape a narrative implicating Trump in the Capitol violence. Former President Trump himself has called for the entire January 6 committee to face legal consequences, stating in a recent NBC interview that “everybody” involved in the investigation “should go to jail.”

Further fueling controversy, Representative Barry Loudermilk recently referred Cheney for a criminal investigation. He cited her alleged coaching of witnesses and refusal to call key individuals who could have provided counter-narratives as evidence of potential misconduct.

The January 6 Select Committee, established by Democrats to investigate the Capitol riot, has been accused by Republicans of being politically motivated. Many critics argue the committee’s primary goal was to damage Trump’s reputation ahead of the 2024 election and to paint his supporters in a negative light.

In addition to Cheney, the committee’s other members, including co-chair Rep. Bennie Thompson, have faced backlash for their handling of the investigation. Accusations range from selective evidence presentation to suppressing testimony that might have contradicted their conclusions.

Amid these allegations, reports suggest President Joe Biden is considering preemptive pardons for committee members, further intensifying public anger. Critics see this as an admission of wrongdoing by the committee and an attempt to shield its members from accountability.

The Rasmussen poll reflects a growing demand for transparency and accountability from those involved in the January 6 investigation. While Cheney was once hailed as a principled Republican willing to stand against Trump, her actions on the committee have tarnished that image for many.

For Trump’s supporters, Cheney’s conduct is seen as part of a broader effort to delegitimize their movement. They argue that the committee ignored critical evidence and witnesses that could have shifted the narrative away from Trump and toward other figures, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who they claim failed to secure the Capitol adequately.

With over half of Americans calling for an FBI investigation, the pressure on Cheney and her allies is mounting. An official inquiry could scrutinize not only her alleged coaching of witnesses but also the broader methods and motivations of the January 6 committee.

If such an investigation proceeds, it could have significant political implications. For Republicans, it would represent a vindication of their claims that the January 6 investigation was a partisan witch hunt. For Democrats, it could undermine one of their most significant efforts to hold Trump accountable.

As for Cheney, her political future remains uncertain. Once a rising star in the Republican Party, her vocal criticism of Trump and her role on the January 6 committee have made her a divisive figure. While she has hinted at a potential run for higher office, including the presidency, her unfavorable ratings among Republican voters pose a significant obstacle.

Whether Cheney’s actions during the January 6 investigation were a principled stand or a politically motivated misstep will continue to be debated. For now, however, public sentiment appears clear: the majority of voters want answers, and they want accountability.

As the calls for an FBI investigation grow louder, Cheney’s legacy—and the true impact of the January 6 committee—remains in the balance.
