Mack Hollins Barefoot Routine Wins Acceptance In New England

Mack Hollins is making noise in New England again, and this time it is not just because of what he does on the field. The Patriots receiver has doubled down on his barefoot lifestyle, kept eating with his hands at camp, and somehow turned a bunch of odd habits into something teammates, fans, and even local restaurants seem to accept. It is a strange little NFL story, but it has a real heartbeat to it.

Hollins is in his second season with the Patriots, and by now the barefoot routine is no secret. He has built a reputation for showing up without shoes, and he says the reaction around him has changed in a big way. According to Hollins, places that once might have looked at him sideways are now treating it like no big deal.

He says restaurants around New England are letting him walk in and eat barefoot, which is a pretty wild thing to normalize if you think about it for more than a second. Hollins joked that at first people probably saw him like “some homeless guy coming in here,” but now the look has shifted. In his words, the vibe is more like “the mechanic homeless guy so it’s all right,” which tells you everything you need to know about his sense of humor.

The barefoot thing is only part of the picture. Hollins also refuses to use forks, spoons, or chopsticks, choosing to eat with his hands instead. His reasoning is classic Hollins: he wants to feel the temperature of the food before it hits his mouth, almost like he is fine-tuning the experience with every bite.

That kind of detail makes him sound less like a standard NFL wideout and more like the guy everybody in the room can point to when the conversation turns to who is the weirdest teammate. Hollins has leaned into that image without sounding defensive about it. He knows exactly how he comes off, and he seems perfectly fine with the label as long as it is not mean-spirited.

And to be fair, his quirks have never looked like a problem for the Patriots. Last season, he unexpectedly became a useful piece of the offense, starting 13 regular-season games and two postseason games. He even scored the team’s only touchdown in Super Bowl LX on a 35-yard catch, which buys a guy a lot of goodwill no matter how many shoes he refuses to wear.

That on-field production helps explain why people around New England are more willing to shrug off the offbeat stuff. If a player is helping in big moments, fans usually do not mind a little weirdness, especially when it is harmless. Hollins is not stirring up drama or causing issues in the locker room, he is just doing life the way he wants to do it.

Still, the image is impossible to miss. He has shown up to games in Buffalo’s brutal cold without a shirt and without shoes, and he once arrived at the AFC Championship game wearing an Animal Muppet-style mask that made him look like he stepped out of a sketch show instead of a football stadium. That kind of energy makes him memorable in a league full of polished, media-trained answers.

Hollins also has a simple explanation for why he avoids shoes when he is not actually playing. In his view, shoes are just a tool, not an identity. He compared them to a hammer, saying he would not walk around carrying one just because he might need it later, and that is the sort of line that sticks with people even if they are not fully sold on the logic.

There is something refreshing about a player who does not seem obsessed with looking normal. Hollins talks like a guy who understands exactly how strange he appears and has decided that pretending otherwise would be pointless. Whether he is strolling into a restaurant barefoot, eating with his hands, or making life harder for anyone who cares too much about conventions, he is doing it with total confidence.

That confidence has a way of changing the room around him. What starts as a gimmick can become part of the everyday fabric of a team, especially when the player backing it up keeps making plays and keeps laughing at himself. In New England, Mack Hollins has turned a personal habit into a full-blown personality, and he does not seem interested in putting the brakes on any time soon.
