AEW star Kenny Omega took aim at an X user after a crude comparison between Will Ospreay and Charlie Kirk crossed a line. The exchange lit up fast, with Omega calling out the joke as tasteless and saying there are some things that should not be tossed around for laughs.
Omega’s reaction came after the user wrote, “Will Ospreay is as bad on the mic as charlie kirk, but can’t sell the neck as well as he did.” That line set off the champion, who did not try to soften his answer and instead went straight at the lack of judgment behind it.
What bothered Omega most was the way the comment dragged a real tragedy into a wrestling jab. Ospreay, a close friend of Omega’s inside and outside the ring, has been dealing with a career-threatening injury, and Omega made clear he thought that struggle deserved more respect than a cheap comparison.
“What the f— is wrong with you? It isn’t hard to try having some class,” he wrote in response. He then added, “A dear friend battles back from a career threatening injury, is no doubt still fighting pain today, and is somehow mocked and compared to a dude that was murdered. I get that a joke is a joke but these things should really be kept separate in my opinion.”
The back-and-forth did not end there. When another X user stepped in to defend the original poster, Omega answered again and tried to keep the tone pointed, but personal.
“Please extend my apologies, genuinely. Perhaps I’ve become too sensitive after my own brush with death. I also know of Will’s efforts behind the scenes more than most so it was sad to see such a harsh comparison,” the current AEW champion added. That line gave the exchange a sharper edge, because it showed Omega was not just reacting as a wrestler, but as someone who has lived through serious risk himself.
Kirk, the conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed during an appearance at Utah Valley University in September. The killing drew national attention, and Tyler Robinson was arrested in connection with the murder.
The event where Kirk was fatally shot had been part of his “American Comeback Tour,” and the attack stunned supporters across the country. His death also became part of a wider national conversation about political violence, online cruelty, and how quickly people can lose sight of basic decency when arguing on social media.
Robinson’s trial is currently ongoing, keeping the case in the public eye and adding even more weight to the way people talk about Kirk’s death. Against that backdrop, Omega’s message landed with extra force, because he was pushing back on a comparison that many would see as way over the line.
For wrestling fans, the moment also showed a different side of Omega, one that was protective, blunt, and unwilling to let a friend’s injury be turned into a punchline. In a space where trash talk is normal and social media gets messy fast, this was a reminder that not every cheap shot deserves a pass.
