Judge Aileen Cannon orders hearing on some of Jack Smith’s actions

According to many reports, former President Donald Trump achieved a significant win over President Joe Biden in a televised debate on Thursday night, which was hosted by CNN.

Earlier that day, Trump also secured another victory when Judge Aileen Cannon ordered a hearing on the actions taken by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

Breitbart reported that the upcoming hearing will focus on the authorization for a raid conducted by federal agents at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort last year, led by Smith.

The raid was approved in Washington, D.C. by Judge Beryl A. Howell, an Obama appointee who is under scrutiny for potential bias against Trump, as alleged by New York Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik.

Additionally, the hearing will address Howell’s controversial decision to breach Trump’s attorney-client privilege by compelling lawyer Evan Corcoran to hand over notes from his discussions with the former president.

Howell justified the move via the “crime-fraud exception,” a rule under which attorney-client privilege can be voided if it is being used by a defendant to further criminal activity.

The Washington Post reported that Steven Cheung, spokesperson for the Trump campaign, lauded Cannon as a “highly respected” judge.

Cheung went on to slam Smith’s indictment, saying, “The entire documents case was a political sham from the very beginning, and it should be thrown out entirely.”

Breitbart noted that a hearing date has not been set, making it even less likely for Trump’s case to be heard by a jury before this year’s election.

In the meantime, Smith may have faced another setback as the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Joseph Fischer, a former police officer and defendant in the January 6 case.

According to Newsmax, Fischer faced charges of obstructing an official proceeding under a 2002 law enacted after the Enron scandal.

Nevertheless, the Supreme Court, in a six to two ruling, stated that prosecutors must prove that defendants from January 6 attempted to tamper with or destroy documents.

Smith has brought charges against Trump in his Washington D.C. case, including one charge for obstruction of an official proceeding and another charge for conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding.
