Jimmie Johnson is shaking up Legacy Motor Club with a fresh ownership group that reaches far beyond the usual racing crowd. The seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion is keeping control, but he is bringing in a mix of elite athletes, business minds, and entertainment names who all know what it means to compete and win.
Johnson announced the group on Thursday, and the list has plenty of star power. It includes six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon, four-time IndyCar champion Dario Franchitti, two-time National League MVP Bryce Harper, Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan, former U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick, 11-time surfing world champion Kelly Slater and six-time MLB All-Star Chase Utley.
The group also features three-time Grammy Award winner Darius Rucker, Emmy Award-winning chef Guy Fieri, Amway co-founder Jen Rubio and CrossHarbor Capital co-founder Sam Byrne. That mix gives Legacy a blend of sports credibility, cultural reach and business muscle that is not exactly standard issue in NASCAR.
“This is not a traditional ownership group,” Johnson said in a statement. “It is a collection of people who understand competition, leadership, innovation, storytelling and how enduring organizations are built. They come from different worlds but share a common belief: that Legacy can become something fundamentally different within motorsports and culture.”
That idea sits at the center of what Legacy is trying to become. This is not just about putting fast cars on the track, but about building a brand that can matter in media, partnerships, hospitality and fan engagement, too. In today’s racing world, the teams that thrive are often the ones that can compete hard on Sunday and still stay relevant all week long.
Johnson made it clear that the new group fits that bigger vision. “Great organizations are built by people who understand what it takes to win — but also what it takes to build,” Johnson said. “The caliber, diversity and perspective of this group speak directly to where Legacy is headed.”
Johnson and Knighthead Capital Management remain the co-owners of Legacy, which currently runs two full-time Cup Series cars. Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek are behind the wheel for the team, while Johnson also enters a third car at select events.
The move also says something about how serious Legacy is about climbing the ladder in a brutal, high-pressure sport. NASCAR is not kind to teams that stand still, and adding this kind of layered ownership group shows the organization is aiming higher than survival. It wants influence, staying power and maybe even a little edge over the competition.
