Sarah Trone Garriott, the Democratic challenger in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District, is trying to present herself as a steady voice on family safety and school privacy. But her public pitch is running straight into a pile of old votes and past remarks that Republicans say tell a very different story.
In a recent campaign video, Trone Garriott said critics were twisting her position and insisted she does not support men in women’s locker rooms. She framed the issue around parental concern and said the debate has been blown out of proportion by politicians looking for a fight.
“I’m a mom with two kids in Iowa public schools. Their education and safety literally keep me up at night. So, when my opponent cherry-picks and twists my record, I have to set it straight,” Trone Garriott said. She also added, “I oppose letting men in women’s locker rooms.”
That message sounds simple enough, but it clashes hard with her legislative record in Des Moines. During her time in the Iowa Senate, Trone Garriott voted against measures that would have kept school bathroom access tied to biological sex and against rules setting girls’ and women’s sports eligibility based on biological sex.
Those votes matter because the issue is not just symbolic. For a lot of voters, bathroom policies and girls’ sports are some of the clearest common-sense lines in the culture fight, especially when schools are involved. Republicans have leaned into that contrast, arguing the candidate’s current tone does not match the choices she already made.
The criticism did not start with this campaign. Before she even won the nomination, opponents were already pointing to a broader pattern that they say shows a far-left streak, including her public faith-related remarks and her role in officiating a satanic wedding as a Lutheran minister.
Vice President J.D. Vance also jumped into the race, using Trone Garriott’s record as a warning sign for voters. In a speech for Republican Rep. Zach Nunn, he said, “His opponent voted to push biological males in girls’ sports as early as kindergarten. She was voting against banning gender transition surgeries for minors,”.
Trone Garriott’s past comments have only added fuel to the fire. In a 2023 address, she described bathroom and sports restrictions as part of a larger pattern of racial and gender conflict, saying, “It’s very threatening of the idea of the white, male powerful figure because it muddies the waters and makes things ambiguous and confusing,”.
She went even further in that same setting, arguing that language about parental rights and protecting women is often used to justify broader political campaigns. “We see all sorts of responses happening in legislation and in community conflict — a lot more emphasis on really funding and supporting the private schools, the parents’ rights. And within that, the parents’ rights piece is used to enact book bans, sports bans about who can play and who can compete; it’s really couched in a language of there’s a threat to women. And white men are responsible to protect women against threats.”
Her campaign has not explained whether her earlier positions have changed or how they square with the softer language now coming from her team. A spokesperson instead said she stands by the campaign video and her emphasis on children and parental authority.
“Sarah does not want men in women’s locker rooms. As a parent, there is nothing more important than the safety of our children, that’s why she will always stand up for a parent’s right to decide what’s best for their children,” spokesperson Zach Schenkman said.
The district itself is no sleepy backwater. Iowa’s 3rd is one of the more competitive House seats in the country, and every shift in tone gets magnified fast. Zach Nunn, the Republican incumbent, narrowly held the seat in 2024, and Democrats are hoping a different message on kitchen-table issues can give them a shot at flipping it.
Republicans, though, are betting that voters will look past the polished campaign clips and focus on what happened when the votes were actually cast. In a year where culture issues still hit nerves in suburban and family-focused races, the gap between what a candidate says now and what she backed before can become the whole story, whether the campaign wants it or not.
