Ilhan Omar Sister Skips Book Tour Event Amid Federal Probe

Ilhan Omar’s family drama just got louder, and the timing could not be worse. Her older sister, Sahra Noor, missed a scheduled book tour stop in Rochester as a federal probe around Omar’s immigration paperwork and financial disclosures kept building heat. The empty room, the unanswered questions, and the widening fallout turned a routine speaking event into part of a much bigger political mess.

Noor was supposed to appear Thursday night at the University of Minnesota Rochester to promote her memoir, Salt in the Snow: A Somali Immigrant Story. Instead, the event went flat, with no sign of the author and no clear explanation for attendees who showed up expecting a conversation, not a ghost town.

That absence landed right as Omar was already under a microscope. Federal investigators are looking into possible immigration fraud tied to her citizenship paperwork, while a separate inquiry is also examining her financial disclosures. Noor has reportedly been subpoenaed in connection with the immigration probe, which makes her missed appearance look a lot less like a random scheduling hiccup and a lot more like somebody trying to stay out of the blast zone.

Noor’s own story is wrapped tightly around the same immigrant journey that has shaped her sister’s political identity. She came to the United States as a refugee in the 1990s with Omar and other family members, and she now lives in Nairobi, Kenya, according to her LinkedIn profile. Her book, built around migration, motherhood, grief, and family, is being pushed as a personal account, but the news cycle has dragged it into something far more combustible.

The event itself had all the markings of a normal campus stop. A flyer posted by a Rochester bookstore said the gathering would begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Intercultural Student Center, with local partners backing the appearance. But when Fox News Digital arrived, the space was empty, and there was no notice saying the event had been canceled, moved, or delayed.

That kind of silence tends to speak louder than any statement. Organizers did not offer a public explanation, and the university also stayed quiet, leaving the missing book event to hang in the air alongside the bigger questions swirling around Omar’s name.

The chaos around the congresswoman intensified after federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations carried out a search at her Washington, D.C., home early Monday morning. The raid reportedly tied back to a criminal fraud investigation, and it quickly fueled speculation about what investigators were really after.

Fox News Digital reported that the probe centers on whether Omar or her late father, Nur Mohamed, fraudulently filled out her citizenship paperwork years ago. Two sources said the investigation could even lead to denaturalization, a serious turn that would push the controversy well beyond political embarrassment.

Then came another layer of pressure. The Wall Street Journal reported that Omar’s phone, passport, and computers were seized during the raid, adding fresh fuel to the fire and making the whole situation look even more invasive. Omar has blasted the search as an “outrageous abuse of power” and called it an “unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies.”

Her husband, Tim Mynett, has also stepped into the fray, pushing back hard on rumors that she left the country after the raid. He has publicly defended her immigration timeline and dismissed the speculation, but the noise has not gone away, especially with Omar staying out of public view since Monday.

Meanwhile, Noor’s book tour keeps moving, at least on paper. She had earlier stops in Minneapolis, the University of Minnesota, and St. Paul, and another event is still listed for Seattle later this month. What should have been a straightforward literary circuit now feels tangled up in a political storm that keeps pulling in more people, more questions, and more attention with every passing day.
