Ilhan Omar and Donald Trump are back in the crossfire, and the clash has turned into a full-blown fight over identity, accusations, and political theater. Omar pushed back hard after Trump revived claims about her name and former marriage, while the controversy around a federal investigation kept the whole story boiling. What started as a name dispute quickly spiraled into a louder battle over credibility, old allegations, and who is really telling the truth.
Omar fired off a blunt response on X, taking aim at Trump and accusing him of recycling conspiracy theories. She wrote, “The pedophile protection party’s president is laundering right-wing conspiracy theories through the most corrupt DOJ in American history,” then added, “Whenever the news turns bad, this creep reaches for one name: mine,” before insisting, “So let’s make it crystal clear. My name has always been Ilhan Omar.”
She then turned her attention to Vice President JD Vance, tossing in another jab that kept the exchange moving fast and nasty. The latest round of attention picked up after a Justice Department court filing, connected to a search warrant for her Washington-area home, identified her as “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” Omar’s office rejected the reporting and doubled down with a simple answer: “Ilhan Omar is her real name.” She has not been charged with a crime.
Trump made the situation even hotter on Truth Social, writing, “It was just revealed that Ilhan Omar’s name is not Ilhan Omar,” and accusing her of using a “fake name.” He also revived long-running claims about her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, repeating allegations that Omar has denied for years and pointing to the name used in the federal documents.
That part of the story has lingered for a long time, mostly because it keeps resurfacing every time Omar lands in the spotlight. When asked in an MS NOW interview whether there was any family connection to Elmi, she said, “Not to my knowledge.” Her spokesperson later said the comment was sarcastic and restated that Omar has “repeatedly and unequivocally” denied the allegation.
Behind the political noise, there is still an active federal investigation hanging over the congresswoman. Investigators are looking into whether Omar or her father made false statements on immigration paperwork, and that alone has made the situation far more serious than a typical partisan food fight.
Agents also searched Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence earlier this month and seized her cellphone and passport, according to earlier reporting.
