Fauci Lawyers Launch Legal Defense Fund As Probes Mount

Anthony Fauci is under growing legal pressure as attorneys open a defense fund and Republican-led investigations keep piling up. The fight now stretches across Congress and state offices, with critics demanding answers about COVID-era decisions, document handling, and what happened behind closed doors.

Lawyers for Fauci have set up a legal defense fund to help cover representation and the paperwork that comes with a widening probe. The move signals that the former federal health official is preparing for a long, expensive battle, not a quick round of headlines and then silence.

Republicans say the scrutiny is justified. Fauci has been accused of misleading the public about COVID-19 origins, and lawmakers have pointed to what they see as a pattern of dodging accountability when questions get uncomfortable.

Sen. Rand Paul has been among the loudest voices pushing back. After Fauci repeatedly invoked the Fifth Amendment during a July hearing, Paul urged the Justice Department to prosecute him, arguing that the public deserves more than evasive answers from someone who shaped major pandemic policy.

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which Paul chairs, also voted to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress after the hearing. That step turned a tense oversight fight into a much bigger clash over transparency, records, and whether top officials can simply stonewall when the questions get serious.

Fauci has denied the allegations. His legal team says the defense fund is meant to cover legal representation and related administrative expenses, and they describe the effort as necessary protection against what they call a barrage of unfair attacks.

According to the fund’s website, contributions are meant to support the ongoing legal defense while inquiries continue. The site also says any money left after the investigations end will be donated to charity, a detail meant to blunt criticism that the fund is built for anything other than legal costs.

The scrutiny is not limited to Washington. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has launched his own investigation and says he wants to know whether Fauci personally profited from the guidance he gave during the pandemic, while Louisiana and West Virginia have lined up behind Florida’s effort.

That state-level pressure adds another layer to an already messy picture. Fauci’s critics see the separate probes as proof that the questions around his conduct did not disappear when he retired in 2022, especially after years of dominating the national response to COVID-19.

His long career gives the case even more baggage. Fauci led the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for nearly four decades, advised seven presidents, and became one of the most recognizable faces in public health during the pandemic.

He was also a central voice behind masking, social distancing, vaccines, and lockdowns, which made him a hero to supporters and a lightning rod for critics. Former President Joe Biden issued him a preemptive pardon before leaving office, but that has not stopped Republicans from pressing ahead with their own investigations.

Meanwhile, a former Fauci adviser, David Morens, recently pleaded guilty to trying to conceal pandemic-related documents by sidestepping public records rules. That development has only deepened suspicion among Republicans who believe the public still has not seen the full story.

The legal and financial stakes are serious, too. Fauci was once the highest-paid federal employee, later drew a pension that some have said rivals a president’s salary, and reported a sizable net worth with his wife in 2021.

For now, the defense fund is the clearest sign that the fight is nowhere near over. The hearings, subpoenas, and state investigations keep moving, and so does the pressure on a man who spent years at the center of the country’s most bitter public health arguments.
