Elijah Bieniemy, the son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, is now facing a delayed court process after a judge approved a mental health competency evaluation. The case has drawn attention because of the family tie, the serious charges involved, and the fact that the hearing will not move forward until that evaluation is done.
According to court records, the 27-year-old will not appear for his preliminary hearing until the competency review is complete. That hearing has been pushed to Sept. 9, giving the court time to sort out whether he is mentally fit to proceed with the case as scheduled. It is a procedural step, but an important one, especially in a case this serious.
Authorities say Elijah was arrested Monday after allegedly shooting his mother, Mia Bieniemy, at their home in Ashburn, Virginia, the day before. She reportedly suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said he is charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling.
A public defender later filed paperwork saying Elijah “appears to suffer from significant mental health issues,” and that he “does not appear able to assist in his own defense at the present time.” Those statements played a role in the court’s decision to grant the evaluation, which can become a key factor in whether the case moves ahead in a normal way.
After the arrest, Elijah was taken to the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, where he is being held without bond. That detail underscores how seriously the allegations are being treated, even as the legal process now pauses for the mental health review.
The timing has added another layer to the story because it comes just as the Chiefs are preparing for the new NFL season. The preliminary hearing is now set for Sept. 9, only days before Kansas City is scheduled to face the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football to open the 2026 season.
Meanwhile, Andy Reid offered a brief update on Mia Bieniemy while speaking to reporters at training camp. He said “she’s doing great,” and added, “She’s doing better and great from where she was. Out of the ICU unit, happy about that. EB is still with her. That part’s important.”
The comments were a small but significant sign that her condition has improved since the shooting. Even so, the situation remains deeply unsettling for everyone around the family, especially with training camp underway and the team’s attention split between football and a personal crisis.
Eric Bieniemy returned to Kansas City as offensive coordinator this offseason after stops with the Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears and UCLA. His first run in Kansas City from 2018 to 2022 helped fuel one of the league’s most explosive offenses and included Super Bowl success, making him one of the most recognizable coaches in the sport.
The Chiefs’ coaching staff and players reported to camp in Missouri this week, and Bieniemy is back in the building as the team prepares for another run. But the legal case involving his son has cast a long shadow over the start of that work, with the next court date and the competency evaluation now hanging over the family.
