Bill Maher’s recent on-air takedown only made the contrast louder, exposing how far-left slogans can sound until they run into the machinery of actual power.
The DSA has been flirting with praise for China in a way that would be funny if it were not so revealing. Reports about members signing onto language defending “Chinese socialism” and celebrating a VIP-style trip to the country make the organization look less like a serious political movement and more like a collection of people dazzled by the very system they claim to admire.
That admiration gets even stranger when the DSA starts listing the things it wants to dismantle at home. Police, the military, ICE, the presidency, the Senate, the Supreme Court, prisons, corporate ownership, the whole list gets tossed into the blender as if a modern country can function by simply wishing away its institutions.
China, meanwhile, is not playing that game. It relies on a powerful military, a dense security apparatus, courts that answer to the state, and a political system that has no patience for dissent, disorder, or competing centers of authority.
That is the part the DSA never seems to sit with. It is easy to chant about socialism in a room full of activists, but it is another thing entirely to admire a regime that crushes opposition, jails critics, and treats control as the highest virtue.
The treatment of the Uyghurs should stop any honest observer cold. The human cost tied to persecution, detention, forced labor, and mass suffering is not some side issue, it is the core warning label on the whole project.
And China’s obsession with borders is another awkward detail for people who speak loosely about sovereignty only when it suits them. The country does not run an open-ended, feel-good border system, and it certainly does not reward chaos or illegal entry with sympathy.
The contradiction gets even more glaring when the DSA rails against the presidency, the Senate, and the Supreme Court. China does not merely dislike those checks and balances, it wipes them out in practice by concentrating power in the hands of one man and the party structure that serves him.
So when the DSA complains about corporate ownership, it ends up praising a state where business is tightly managed by the same political class that controls nearly everything else. There is nothing liberating about that setup, no matter how many glossy phrases get attached to it.
Bill Maher cut through the noise by reading the movement’s own words back to it. He mocked the standard socialist line about “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs,” and then pushed deeper into the kind of rhetoric that celebrates seizing property and elevating communists as if history had never already tried this and failed spectacularly.
His audience, which is hardly a room full of conservatives, still laughed at the sheer absurdity of it. That says plenty. Once the slogans are stripped down and spoken out loud, they start sounding less like a blueprint and more like a warning.
The same goes for the idea that China is somehow the model here. It is not a beacon of equality or freedom, it is a state that rewards obedience, punishes resistance, and keeps the public in line through force, fear, and relentless political discipline.
That is why the DSA’s fascination with China lands so badly. It reveals a movement eager to posture as moral and radical while clinging to the imagery of a system that would never tolerate its own members if they tried to practice those same habits in real life.
Even the language about being treated like “VIPs” and “royally” by Chinese hosts says a lot. It points to a highly managed charm offensive, the kind that flatters visitors just enough to make them repeat the message once they get home.
China knows exactly what it is doing with these trips, and the DSA seems eager to help. That combination makes the whole spectacle feel less like enlightenment and more like a perfectly staged lesson in how propaganda works when the target is already halfway convinced.
