Hakeem Jeffries recently claimed that the One Big Beautiful Bill would lead to dire consequences, stating, “PEOPLE WILL LITERALLY DIE.” However, this statement appears to be an exaggeration. The bill aims to strengthen Medicaid for those it was meant to help, such as pregnant women, children, low-income seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
By removing at least 1.4 million illegal immigrants from Medicaid, the bill directs resources to American citizens. It also ends taxpayer-funded gender transition procedures for minors and addresses fraud and waste. In doing so, Medicaid is refocused on those it aims to serve.
Currently, 4.8 million able-bodied adults on Medicaid are not engaged in work. The bill introduces requirements for work, education, training, or volunteering, echoing policies from the Clinton era. These measures aim to promote self-sufficiency and the dignity of work, not punishment.
Joe Biden’s past support for work requirements makes this a bipartisan solution. The bill seeks to encourage individuals to earn their wages rather than rely on government handouts. Public opinion appears to be on board, with many supporting these initiatives.
A KFF Health Tracking Poll found that 62% of adults favor work requirements for Medicaid. Among them, 82% of Republicans, 60% of independents, and nearly half of Democrats are in agreement. This suggests a broad base of support for the policy.
The poll also highlighted public ignorance about current Medicaid recipients’ activities. Many are unaware that most beneficiaries are already working or involved in qualifying activities. This misinformation fuels the narrative against reasonable work requirements.
Democrats and certain media outlets have mislabeled these policies as radical. In reality, they continue a long-standing bipartisan approach. Work requirements have been part of assistance programs like SNAP and child care subsidies for years.
These policies condition aid on employment-related activities, such as job searching or volunteering. Section 1115 waivers of the Social Security Act allow states the flexibility to pilot these reforms. This supports the idea of states as “laboratories of democracy.”
Operationally, work requirements help direct aid to those genuinely in need. They reduce dependency and waste by encouraging employment. Historical data shows success, with 1996 welfare reforms leading to decreased caseloads and increased employment.
Advocates argue that work requirements can aid in rebuilding the labor force post-pandemic. By reconnecting able-bodied adults with jobs, they address ongoing labor shortages. This approach offers economic and administrative benefits.
Work requirements also foster social and health advantages. Employment is linked to better physical and mental health, with studies showing lower depression rates and longer life expectancy. These benefits extend beyond mere financial stability.
Promoting routine and responsibility, work requirements encourage upward mobility. They act as a screening mechanism, ensuring resources reach those truly in need. This makes safety-net programs more sustainable over time.
These policies may also yield long-term family benefits. By requiring work or job-related activities, parents model responsibility for their children. This helps break cycles of dependency and fosters better outcomes for future generations.
Research supports the idea that these requirements contribute to financial stability and educational improvement. Welfare experts have noted children’s modest improvements in academic achievement when parents work. Such findings bolster the case for work requirements.
Proponents argue that addressing immediate financial needs is not enough. Welfare policy should also promote long-term self-sufficiency and family well-being. Work requirements are seen as a step in the right direction for achieving these goals.
