The latest humanoid robot spectacle in Beijing turned speed, strength, and awkward wipeouts into one loud reminder that robotics is moving fast. A machine beat one of the most iconic sprint marks in sports, then promptly needed help after crashing through the finish area, making the event feel equal parts breakthrough and circus.
On the opening day of the World Humanoid Robot Games, a Beijing-based robot named Lightning Bolt covered 100 meters in 9.39 seconds, just under Usain Bolt’s famous 9.58-second record from 2009. The run came with a catch, though: the robot could not slow itself in time and slammed into a blue cushioned barrier at the end of the track.
That rough stop was the part people could not ignore. Instead of striding away in triumph like a human sprinter, the robot had to be carried off on a stretcher, which gave the whole scene a strange mix of bragging rights and damage control.
The sprint was not even the first time a machine at the event had posted eye-catching numbers. Before the games officially opened, a humanoid robot from Chinese smartphone maker Honor reportedly ran 100 meters in 9.32 seconds during a trial, hitting a top speed of 14.5 meters per second.
Those results are fueling the kind of buzz organizers probably hoped for. The second year of the games features more than 2,000 robots across 51 events and about 1,000 competitions, ranging from running and soccer to table tennis, boxing, dancing, and other tests of balance and control.
The setting matters, too. The competition is being held at the National Speed Skating Oval, the same venue built for the 2022 Winter Olympics, and it opened the same week as Beijing’s World Robot Conference, where companies showed off thousands of products, including humanoid models.
Some of the most impressive numbers went beyond sprinting. In a standing high jump, one humanoid robot reportedly cleared 2.88 meters, well past the best result from last year’s first edition of the games and even higher than the long-standing human world record set by Javier Sotomayor in 1993.
Still, the crowd reaction was not just about medals and records. Spectators talked about how quickly the machines are improving, and that sense of momentum was hard to miss as robots stumbled, recovered, and kept trying to look more human with every event.
One attendee, Li Yanfeng, said the technology was evolving fast, even though she had once been uneasy about artificial intelligence and the risk of it replacing people. Now, she said, the progress seemed impossible to ignore, and she came to see it for herself.
Another spectator, Yang Shangzheng, called the performances amazing and said it felt surreal to watch machines take on sports that are normally considered deeply human. That reaction captures the whole appeal of the games, where curiosity and concern sit side by side.
The event also reflects China’s push to stay in the global robotics race, especially against the United States. Organizers said 16 countries are taking part, including Germany, Japan, and the U.S., while the lineup includes oddball contests like tug of war and weightlifting alongside more familiar sports.
That larger competition has not gone unnoticed in Washington. The U.S. has tightened scrutiny of Chinese-made robots, and President Donald Trump’s FCC recently moved to block imports of new foreign-made humanoid robots over national security concerns tied to supply chains and sensitive technology.
FCC Chair Brendan Carr backed the move, saying the agency was acting alongside national security officials to protect critical U.S. infrastructure. The policy fight hangs over the showmanship in Beijing, where the robots may be racing for records, but the real contest is clearly about who builds the future first.
