California Post Backs Steve Hilton For Governor Over Becerra

California’s governor’s race is shaping up as a sharp choice between change and more of the same. Steve Hilton is being pushed as the candidate with fresh ideas, while Xavier Becerra is painted as a familiar Sacramento insider who has spent years climbing the ladder without leaving much behind. The fight centers on taxes, housing, energy costs, crime, schools, and the basic sense that the state has lost its footing.

Hilton has tried to make the race about everyday pain, not insider buzz. His pitch includes letting Californians keep more of what they earn by putting income up to $150,000 out of reach of state taxes, a move that has caught the attention of voters across the political spectrum. That kind of idea stands out in a state where the cost of living keeps squeezing families from every angle.

Housing is another area where Hilton is pressing hard. He wants California to build outward instead of forcing dense vertical development on communities that want something more livable and familiar. The argument is simple enough: families want homes they can afford, neighborhoods that feel like neighborhoods, and a market that stops treating ordinary buyers like an afterthought.

Energy and fuel prices remain a huge sore spot, and Hilton has leaned into that frustration. He has blamed high gas taxes and costly green policies for making life more expensive without delivering much in return for working people. In a state where every trip to the pump feels like a punch, that message lands fast.

He has also kept attention on the state’s public safety and social breakdown, including the homelessness and drug crises that have made some city streets look abandoned by government. By going to places like Skid Row and fentanyl-ridden areas, Hilton has tried to show voters the raw consequences of years of bad decisions. It is a reminder that policy debates are not just talking points when people are sleeping outside and overdose deaths keep piling up.

Becerra, by contrast, is being framed as a career politician with little to point to besides longevity. He had a long run in Washington, moved into California’s attorney general’s office, later served in the Biden administration, and now wants another shot at power. Critics say that path says more about political survival than leadership.

The harshest line against him is that he is all polish and no substance. Even allies from the Democratic world have reportedly viewed his rise with skepticism, and that only deepens the sense that he is a placeholder rather than a reformer. In a state hungry for answers, that is a rough place to be.

The broader backdrop makes the race even more intense. California still has a massive economy, but it also leads the nation in homelessness, faces relentless business departures, and continues to lose jobs in industries that once defined its future. Hollywood, once a symbol of opportunity and glamour, has watched work drain away while companies look for friendlier ground elsewhere.

Wildfires, broken infrastructure, failing schools, and wasted public money all feed the same anxiety. Residents hear lofty speeches about climate and progress, then watch hundreds of thousands of acres burn and taxpayer dollars disappear into bloated systems that never seem to improve. That gap between rhetoric and reality is exactly where this election is being fought.

Democrats have controlled the state for years, and the results are impossible to ignore. The lines at the gas pump are longer, the housing market is tighter, the streets are rougher, and the mood is more bitter by the month. That is why this race has turned into more than a normal campaign, with voters staring at a plain question: keep the same machine rolling, or try something that feels a lot different.
