Cable One Faces Subscriber Decline, Investors Demand Fiscal Discipline

The Artisan Mid Cap Value Fund’s fourth-quarter 2025 letter flagged Cable One as a clear misstep, citing weakening subscriber growth, rising competition and operational trouble that strained the company’s finances. The fund recapped market moves, its own returns versus the Russell Midcap Value Index, and highlighted why Cable One’s hopes for subscriber-driven growth did not pan out. Below you’ll find a concise, neutral rundown of the fund’s takeaways, the stock’s recent performance, and the core reasons the managers sold the position.

Artisan Partners framed the quarter as one where US equities kept moving higher even amid early volatility, and the firm noted a shift in market leadership late in the year. The fund, which targets undervalued mid-cap stocks with solid financials, posted modest positive returns across its share classes in Q4 of 2025, slightly ahead of the Russell Midcap Value Index. Still, the broader context mattered: mid-cap growth lagged, and stock selection hurt performance after prior years of positive contribution.

Cable One drew specific focus as the largest mistake the managers identified for the year, which led to the position being sold in September. The company, a broadband provider focused on less-dense rural markets, had been valued on the expectation that its premium service and low household penetration would drive steady subscriber growth. Over the holding period, though, subscriber momentum faltered and execution problems surfaced, undermining the original thesis.

At the end of March 2026, Cable One traded near $91 per share after a sharp drop, with a one-month decline of about 21 percent and a 52-week loss approaching 67 percent. Market capitalization fell into the small-mid range, reflecting the market’s reassessment of its growth prospects and the strain that operational challenges were placing on financial flexibility. That combination reduced managers’ confidence that the company could navigate worsening conditions without painful trade-offs.

“Turning to our review of the full year, the portfolio trailed the index in 2025. Stock selection was negative for a second consecutive year after contributing positively for the calendar years 2021, 2022 and 2023. Besides our investment style being out of favor, we also made missteps. Our biggest was Cable One, Inc. (NYSE:CABO), a broadband provider in rural markets, which we sold in September. Our investment case had been predicated on Cable One’s ability to grow subscribers given its premium offering and low penetration; however, subscriber trends meaningfully weakened during our holding period. Tepid household formation in a sluggish housing market, fixed wireless and fiber competition taking market share and execution issues rolling out a new billing system were among the key factors. While its valuation indicated a cheap security based on a variety of scenarios, its financial condition is now impeding on the business and leaves management no room to operate the business strategically if conditions deteriorate further.”

The fund pointed to a mix of structural and tactical problems that killed the thesis: slow household formation in weaker housing markets, fierce competition from fixed wireless and fiber entrants, and material execution issues tied to a billing system rollout. Those operational breakdowns are costly in the short term and make subscriber retention and monetization much harder. When execution slips and competition accelerates, valuation narratives that rely on steady customer wins can collapse quickly.

Cable One’s revenue in the fourth quarter of 2025 fell compared with the prior year, and that top-line pressure added to the concern about margins and cash flow. With revenue down and subscriber metrics under pressure, the company had less room to absorb rollout costs or subsidize competitive responses. That dynamic is especially worrying for businesses that need healthy free cash flow to invest in network improvements or to fend off rivals moving into previously underpenetrated markets.

Investor interest in the stock did not disappear entirely, with hedge fund holdings nudging higher quarter over quarter, but that did not alter the fund managers’ view that the operational and competitive risks had materially changed the outlook. Even if a stock looks cheap on spreadsheets under multiple scenarios, deteriorating financial flexibility limits management’s ability to execute a strategic response if headwinds intensify. Artisan ultimately concluded the downside and the execution uncertainty outweighed the upside.

The fund’s disclosure of the Cable One outcome is a reminder that concentrated bets in niche infrastructure names carry asymmetric risks when external forces shift rapidly. In this case, the mix of a sluggish housing backdrop, new competitors stealing share, and internal system rollouts created a pressure cooker that reversed an otherwise reasonable growth expectation. For investors watching mid-cap telecom names, the episode stresses the importance of tracking subscriber trends, competitive entries and the progress of any major operational initiatives in real time.
