Blanche Backs Pirro After Lincoln Reflecting Pool Case Dismissal

Todd Blanche stood firmly behind Jeanine Pirro on Sunday after her office moved to toss out the vandalism case tied to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The dispute has turned into a sharp clash over evidence, prosecutorial judgment, and whether the case should be revived in a different form.

Prosecutors had moved on July 31 to dismiss the case against Olympic canoeist David Hearn, who had been accused of damaging the newly renovated site. The $14 million project had shown cracks, algae growth, and peeling sealant, and investigators later said the damage may have come from a failed renovation rather than deliberate vandalism.

Blanche made clear that he and President Donald Trump both back Pirro, even while admitting the president’s frustration is easy to understand. He said the courtroom record did not neatly settle every question, and that a witness account pointing to Hearn still leaves room for doubt about what can actually be proved.

“I absolutely support U.S. Attorney Pirro, as does President Trump,” he said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

“Now, that’s different than whether the president is extraordinarily frustrated at what happened in that case. And I don’t in any way fault him for that.”

That balance matters because the case has become bigger than one damaged monument. It now sits at the intersection of public anger, federal charging decisions, and the expectation that memorials and landmarks get real protection, not half-hearted excuses when something goes wrong.

Blanche pointed to a witness who reportedly said they saw Hearn vandalizing the reflecting pool, but he also noted that witness statements alone do not make a case airtight. That is where the fight gets messy, because suspicion and proof are two very different things once a prosecutor has to stand behind the filing in court.

“Well, there’s a witness that said, ‘I observed the defendant vandalizing the reflecting pool.’ Now, that’s different than whether ultimately we have the proof.”

Hearn has denied wrongdoing, and the dismissal has only intensified the political pressure around the matter. Trump has pushed for a harder look at the episode, saying the issue should not simply vanish because the early evidence is complicated.

Blanche also gave Pirro credit for taking vandalism against national memorials seriously. He said she is doing a “phenomenal job” and argued that one shaky case should not overshadow a broader effort to go after people who damage public monuments.

That defense came as Pirro’s office was also handling another property-destruction case involving a veterans memorial. In that incident, a female suspect was accused of spray-painting the words “clean hands, diary money” in bright pink and dumping bubble soap into a fountain, another ugly example of disrespect for public spaces.

“U.S. Attorney Pirro is doing a phenomenal job enforcing that, going after anybody who’s doing it. And I think judging her on a single case because of the evidence that we had is not fair,” he said.

Blanche also said he would take seriously the White House’s request that the Justice Department look at whether a new misdemeanor case could be brought against Hearn. That would not erase the doubts around the original filing, but it does show the administration is still searching for a path that reflects the seriousness of the alleged damage.

“Will I take the President of the United States’s view on something into consideration? Yes, of course,” he said.

“That’s certainly something that I listen to.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, leaving the matter hanging in that familiar Washington way where the next step is still being sorted out. For now, the fight sits right where it started, with a damaged memorial, a disputed case, and a lot of heat around who got it right and who got it wrong.
