Airbus has pushed one of commercial aviation’s biggest ambitions a step closer, with a marathon test flight that stretched past 24 hours and put Qantas’ ultra-long-haul dream back in the spotlight. The mission centered on a specially modified A350-1000ULR, built to prove that nonstop travel between Australia and Europe can move from bold idea to real-world routine.
The test jet covered 14,338 miles from Melbourne to Toulouse in 24 hours and 24 minutes, based on Flightradar24 data. That kind of distance is not just impressive on paper, it is the sort of number that makes airline planners, engineers, and passengers all pay attention.
The flight was part of Qantas’ Project Sunrise, a program launched in 2017 with a very clear target: create the world’s longest nonstop commercial routes. The aircraft was tested over a two-month campaign that began in June, with each long run helping engineers measure how the plane and its systems hold up under extreme conditions.
Air travel records always invite comparisons, and this one already outpaced a landmark Boeing flight from 2005. That earlier 777-200LR trip went 13,422 miles from Hong Kong to London in 22 hours and 42 minutes, which shows just how far aircraft range has moved in a couple of decades.
Interest in the test flight was enormous, too. More than 3.6 million people followed it on Flightradar24, making it the platform’s second-most-tracked flight ever, according to the service.
The aircraft itself is designed for serious endurance. It carries an extra fuel tank with room for about 20,000 additional liters, or 5,283 pounds of fuel, and it can seat 238 passengers.
That added range is what makes the whole project possible, but the cabin side matters just as much. Qantas says the interiors are being shaped around comfort, with materials and design choices aimed at making a flight that lasts nearly a full day feel a lot less punishing.
The airline has ordered 12 of the jets, and the delivery timeline is already in motion. The first aircraft is expected in April 2027, with daily nonstop flights between Sydney and London planned for October 2027.
That route would be a huge deal for travelers who want to skip layovers and cut hours off a trip that usually eats up an entire travel day anyway. The target flight time is expected to land somewhere between 19 and 21 hours, depending on winds and the exact path taken.
There is a lot riding on the performance of the plane, not just for Qantas but for Airbus as well. Long-range flying has become a proving ground for efficiency, engineering, and passenger comfort, and this test flight showed that the bar keeps rising.
For airlines, routes like this are about more than bragging rights. They open up direct connections between far-flung cities, reduce the hassle of connections, and give premium long-haul travel a whole new meaning.
The recent flight also reinforced how much planning goes into getting a route like this off the ground. Fuel capacity, aircraft weight, cabin layout, and weather all matter, and when every one of those pieces has to work together, a simple nonstop trip suddenly becomes a major technical achievement.
As the testing continues, the focus will stay on whether the aircraft can consistently deliver the range and reliability needed for scheduled service. If it can, the Sydney-to-London run could become one of the most watched flights in the world, not just by aviation fans but by anyone who has ever stared down a brutal long-haul itinerary and wished for a direct way through it.
