Sony Launches Japan Only $350 Midnight Black PS5 In November

  • Japan-only pricing and availability for a new PS5 model
  • All-black Midnight Black design and matching accessories
  • Release date, preorder timing, and regional restrictions
  • Disc Drive option and total cost for buyers in Japan
  • PS5 features that remain unchanged on the new model
  • Timing that lines up with the PS5 anniversary and GTA VI

Sony is rolling out a new PS5 Digital Edition with a sharp all-black look, but there is a big catch: it is limited to Japan. The console lands at a far lower price than many buyers have seen lately, which makes it an eye-catcher at a time when hardware costs have been climbing fast. For Japanese shoppers, it is a rare deal that mixes a fresh colorway with a friendlier price tag.

The new system is officially priced at ¥55,000, or about $350, for the 825 GB Digital Edition. That is a steep contrast to the higher prices popping up elsewhere, especially for a disc-free model that normally feels like it should be the cheaper route. Sony is calling the look Midnight Black, and it gives the PS5 a sleek, low-profile style that feels a little more premium right out of the box.

There is no sneaking this one out of Japan and expecting it to work like a standard import. The console is locked to the Japanese market, with the language set to Japanese and the region setting tied to Japan as well. That means the lower price is paired with some serious limits, and anyone outside the country will have to look on from the sidelines.

Pre-orders began on October 20, 2026, through PlayStation retail locations and online stores across Japan. The official release date is November 19, 2026, so the window between preorder and launch is not especially long. That timing alone should help build some heat, especially for buyers who have been waiting for a PS5 deal that does not feel painfully inflated.

Sony is also offering a Midnight Black Disc Drive separately, which gives buyers a way to add physical media support without changing the overall look. Purchased together, the extra drive adds ¥11,980, or around $75, to the total. Even with that add-on, the package still lands as an attention-grabbing option compared with the prices many gamers have gotten used to seeing.

The hardware itself is still a PS5 through and through, so the core features stay familiar. Buyers still get 3D audio, a fast SSD, and backward compatibility with PS4 games, along with the same basic experience players expect from the platform. The new finish changes the vibe more than the machine, which is probably the point.

There is also a little timing drama in the background. November 19 sits close to the PS5’s six-year anniversary on November 12, and it also lines up with the long-awaited arrival of Grand Theft Auto VI. That is a hefty one-two punch for Sony, since big launches tend to pull undecided buyers into the ecosystem fast.

Sony has already been leaning into the Midnight Black theme with other gear, including accessories that match the darker aesthetic. The new PS5 slots neatly into that lineup and gives fans another way to build a more cohesive setup. In Japan, at least, the combination of price, style, and timing is set up to make a lot of noise.
