Black+Decker string trimmers are a mixed bag in the broader tool world, but the brand’s weed eaters have earned a following for being straightforward to service. When the line runs out, getting the spool back in shape is usually less of a headache than people expect, and a careful reset can bring the tool right back to life.
Start by killing the power before anything else. Unplug a corded model or pull the battery from a cordless one, then turn the trimmer over so the underside of the spool housing is facing up.
Press the two tabs on opposite sides of the orange spool cap and lift it off. Keep an eye on the spring so it stays in place, since that little part matters more than it looks.
Once the cap is off, pull the empty spool straight out of the housing. This is also the perfect chance to clear out bits of broken line, grass clumps, or other junk that may have packed in around the spool.
Some Automatic Feed Spool models have a small lever at the base of the housing that can pop loose during removal. If that happens, it needs to be pushed back into the correct position before the new spool goes in, or the feed system may act up later.
If you are using a pre-wound spool, peel away the tape that holds the line end in place and pull out a short length of fresh line. Thread that line through the eyelet in the housing so it sticks out from the side where trimming actually happens.
Black+Decker also offers bulk line for users who prefer to wind their own spool. In that case, anchor the line in the starter hole and wind it tightly in the direction shown by the arrows, keeping the coils flat so they do not overlap or jam.
With the line set, the next move is to seat the spool back into the housing. Place it on the central boss with the arrowed side facing outward, then press it down firmly until it sits flush and does not wobble.
If the spool feels off-center, rotate it slightly until it lines up cleanly with the housing. A snug fit matters here, because even a small misalignment can throw off the feed and make the trimmer feel stubborn.
After that, snap the spool cap back into place by matching it to the housing and pressing until the tabs click. On models with parking slots or notches, make sure the line is free before you go any further, since a trapped line can block the first spin-up.
Now reconnect the battery or plug the tool back in. Hold the trimmer in an open spot and give it a short test run to see whether the line advances the way it should when the head is tapped or when the auto-feed system kicks in.
If the line refuses to move, cut the power again and check the basics. A spool that is not seated fully, line that is the wrong diameter, or debris blocking the eyelet can all stop the feed cold, and none of those problems takes long to fix once they are spotted.
After that quick check, the trimmer should be ready for another pass around the yard. The whole job comes down to keeping the spool aligned, the line cleanly fed, and the housing free of grime so the tool can do what it was built to do.
