Justin Pearson’s primary win in Tennessee’s newly drawn 9th Congressional District puts a high-profile progressive in position for a tough fall race. Backed by national left-wing activists and riding on a massive fundraising edge, Pearson now shifts from a crowded Democratic field to a general election matchup with Republican Brent Taylor, who comes in with his own momentum and a Trump endorsement.
Pearson beat state Sen. London Lamar, community activist Marion LaTroy Alexandria-Williams and attorney Jim Torino in the Democratic primary. The Memphis-area race drew attention well beyond Tennessee because Pearson has become one of the best-known names tied to the “Tennessee Three,” a group that turned a statehouse protest into a national flashpoint.
That profile has been a big part of Pearson’s appeal. He has built a reputation around sharp, sermon-like speeches and a brand of politics that plays well with the activist wing of the Democratic Party, especially among groups that like confrontation more than compromise.
His support list reads like a who’s who of the modern progressive movement. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley and Summer Lee all showed up at a Memphis rally for him last month, while Justice Democrats, the Working Families Party, MoveOn and Indivisible also lined up behind his campaign.
That kind of backing helped Pearson enter the race with a war chest that dwarfed his opponents’ operations. Money matters in a district that is no longer the safe Democratic seat Memphis once gave Tennessee Democrats, and Pearson’s fundraising edge gave him breathing room while the primary field tried to catch up.
The road to this race started with redistricting, and that changed everything. Tennessee’s congressional map was redrawn in a way that split Memphis into three Republican-leaning districts, forcing Democrats to scramble and prompting longtime Rep. Steve Cohen to step aside.
Before the changes, Memphis sat mostly intact inside the 9th District and served as Democrats’ one dependable congressional foothold in a state that has trended hard to the right. Now the new map leaves the GOP favored in all nine of Tennessee’s House districts, a major shift in a state where Republicans already dominate statewide politics.
Pearson’s national profile was built back in 2023, when he and fellow lawmakers protested on the House floor after the Covenant School shooting in Nashville, a tragedy that left three children and three adults dead. The protest turned the young lawmaker into a cause célèbre for the left and a lightning rod for everyone else.
Republican lawmakers later expelled Pearson and Justin Jones over the protest, though both eventually returned to their seats. Gloria Johnson, the third member of the group, narrowly avoided expulsion by one vote, which only added to the political drama surrounding the episode.
Now Pearson is trying to turn that attention into a congressional launch. The general election is shaping up as a battle between a left-leaning activist star and a Republican nominee who has the benefit of a reshaped district that looks far more favorable to the GOP than the old map ever did.
For Democrats, Pearson’s win keeps the spotlight on a familiar brand of politics that thrives on energy, outrage and big names. For Republicans, the new district lines and Taylor’s backing create a real opening to lock down another seat in a state where the map has gotten a lot friendlier, a lot faster.
