Arran Strong, a respected British surfer, is being remembered after a search off Portugal ended with authorities presuming he was dead four days after he disappeared in the water. The 28-year-old had been out with his coach near the Algarve coast when a routine stop turned into a desperate situation, and the search was later called off. Strong’s long career, his standing in British surfing, and the heartbreaking details from those closest to him all point to how fast the ocean can shift from familiar to unforgiving.
Strong was reportedly about a mile offshore with coach Jose Maria Pyrrait when they paused to drink water and snap a few photos. Pyrrait later explained that after the break, he let Strong go on ahead because he normally moved faster and would wait up when needed. For a few moments, nothing seemed unusual, but once Pyrrait stopped to look back, Strong was no longer in view.
Pyrrait described the moment his attention snapped from a normal training rhythm to alarm. He said Strong’s board was drifting roughly 100 meters away, and he rushed toward it, diving again and again to try to find him in water that was deep and hard to read. Visibility was poor, and what might have been a quick recovery effort quickly became a race against time.
After realizing he could not locate Strong on his own, Pyrrait reached out for help from shore. A local fisherman later picked him up, and the search stretched on for nearly 2 1/2 hours as the boat’s sonar was used to scan the area. Even with that effort, the sea gave up nothing easily, and the uncertainty only deepened as the hours passed.
According to the Autoridade Marítima Nacional, authorities were first alerted when Strong was reported in trouble at 11:33 BST on Monday. The agency said the young man disappeared at sea while crossing from Monte Clerigo Beach to Carrapateira. By Thursday, the search had been suspended, closing the door on any hopeful rescue outcome and leaving behind only grief and unanswered questions.
Pyrrait’s comments made the loss feel intensely personal. He said Strong had been with him for years, training and spending weekends and holidays together since he was ten, and described him as being like a son. Those words carried the weight of a bond built over time, not just a coach-athlete connection, but something much deeper and harder to replace.
He also shared that Strong had often spoken as if he would die young, a detail that now sits painfully heavy in the aftermath. Pyrrait said the only small comfort he could find was that Strong died at sea, a place he loved dearly. It was a raw, aching message from someone trying to make sense of the impossible while still speaking about a young man he clearly cherished.
Strong had earned real respect in the sport, both in Britain and internationally. He was the highest-ranked British surfer when he represented Great Britain in each of the last two World Surfing Games, and he spent a decade competing on the World Surf League circuit. That kind of consistency matters in surfing, where staying relevant year after year takes skill, grit, and a stomach for constant change.
GB Surfing released a statement acknowledging his tragic passing and praising the way he carried himself in and out of the water. The group said Strong proudly represented Great Britain at the 2024 and 2025 ISA World Surf Games, where he finished as the top British male surfer both times. They also described him as a kind, generous teammate whose presence left a lasting mark on everyone around him.
