But the 90% rule is one of those details that quickly makes the sport make sense, because it decides who officially counts as a classified finisher. It also sits alongside other percentage-based rules that shape qualifying, points, and race results in ways casual fans often miss.
The 90% rule comes from the FIA, and it is all about race distance, not drama at the line. A driver is treated as a classified finisher once they complete at least 90% of the scheduled laps, even if the car never actually reaches the checkered flag.
