OKC Police Arrest Suspect After Molotov Attack On Wheelchair Victim

Video released by Oklahoma City police shows a man in a wheelchair set on fire by a suspect wielding a Molotov cocktail just across the street from police headquarters, and quick action from detectives, a bystander and firefighters helped stop the attack and get the suspect into custody.

The footage, recorded around 8 a.m. on July 2, captures a startling act of violence in broad daylight mere steps from law enforcement. Witnesses watched as a man walking westbound turned, ignited a crude incendiary device and hurled it directly at a person in a wheelchair, setting the victim aflame. The scene unfolded on a busy street, which made the rapid response that followed even more crucial.

Police praised the response: “What happened next showed the absolute best of our community and our first responders,” and detectives along with a quick-thinking bystander rushed into danger to help the victim. Responders and firefighters worked to douse the flames and provide immediate medical aid at the scene. “Thanks to this rapid, heroic response, the victim is expected to recover, and the suspect is behind bars.”

The video shows the victim managing to wheel himself away from the flames, but then appearing to be pushed back toward the fire by the attacker. Two Oklahoma City detectives exited their vehicle at the intersection and took a 38-year-old suspect into custody on the spot. Court documents detail the quick sequence: ignition, attack, intervention, and arrest within moments of the assault.

Authorities say the suspect told investigators he was “looking for marks” and believed he saw one on the victim, which motivated the attack. That belief, according to the affidavit, led him to manufacture incendiary devices with lethal intent. The affidavit also indicates he made two Molotov cocktails but only deployed one before detectives intervened and stopped further harm.

According to the court affidavit, the suspect told investigators he was “looking for marks” and intended to kill the victim because he thought he saw a “mark” and believed the victim was a child molester. He also told investigators he made two Molotov cocktails but was only able to use one before detectives stopped him.

After the attack, the suspect was booked into the Oklahoma County jail on complaints of first-degree arson, assault and battery with a deadly weapon, assault with intent to kill and two counts of possessing, using, manufacturing or threatening to use an incendiary device or explosives.

Medical reports indicate the victim suffered burns on the back of his neck and arms but was treated at the scene and declined a hospital trip. A local crew later found the man near the attack site and reported that he is homeless, declined to be filmed and said he’s OK, feels grateful, and believes God was with him during the harrowing incident. The victim also told reporters he did not know the attacker or the motive behind the assault.

An image from booking records circulated with the coverage, showing the suspect in custody. The suspect faces several serious charges, including arson and multiple assault counts that reflect the intent attributed to him in court documents. Authorities emphasized that arrests and charges followed quickly thanks to officers being nearby and civilians stepping up to help.

Advocates expressed shock at the attack and called it a wake-up call for the community. Meghan Mueller called the video “absolutely horrific.” She added, “The fact that this happened is something that should shock the community,” and warned that crimes against vulnerable people demand stronger attention and care.

Mueller urged a collective response and told reporters, “The really important thing to remember is that we all need to take better care of each other.” Her comments underscored the broader concern for public safety and the need to protect those who are most exposed to violence on the streets.
