July 4 Mob In South Carolina Injures Two Officers, Guns Recovered

A violent scene at a North Charleston block party on July 4 left two female officers injured after a chaotic mob-style attack, with firearms and a makeshift spear recovered. Police say the event had been permitted and that officers tried repeatedly to calm the crowd, but gunfire, fireworks and fights pushed the night into dangerous territory. Video of the assaults circulated online and multiple arrests were made as investigators review body camera footage.

The city had cleared the neighborhood block party in advance, and police leadership met with organizers to coordinate traffic and safety plans. Officers arrived after reports of gunfire and people shooting fireworks toward cars, and they immediately began making public announcements that the event had ended. Despite those efforts to de-escalate, conflicts escalated and more gunfire rang out, forcing officers to get out of their vehicles and try to restore order.

During the response, officers said they recovered several firearms and a makeshift spear from the scene. Police said “multiple officers were physically assaulted, with two female officers sustaining minor injuries,” and “several attendees were arrested as a result of their own actions.” Body-camera and cell phone clips captured parts of the melee and showed officers under attack while trying to separate fighting groups.

The video shocked residents and sparked immediate fallout in the community. One advocate watching the footage said, “A lot of emotions. Ashamed. Disgraced. I’m very pleased that no one was seriously hurt. That could have gone really bad.” He also repeated, “‘We can’t attack and jump on a police officer who was just trying to do her job and beat her like that, like a mob. That just can’t happen.'” Those words echoed through neighborhood conversations and local media coverage.

North Charleston Police Chief Ron Camacho confirmed the injured officers are okay and back at work, but he acknowledged the department was not prepared for how large and volatile the incident became. He told reporters there had been intelligence about juveniles planning fights and fireworks, but not for the scale and intensity seen that night. Camacho said three juveniles and one adult were arrested, with at least one or two taken into custody for assaulting an officer.

Multiple neighboring agencies responded to the call for backup, including county and state law enforcement partners who helped secure the scene. Police praised members of the public who intervened to help officers during the attacks and emphasized that those responsible will face prosecution. Police said “Attacks on law enforcement are unacceptable, and those responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” and reaffirmed that the safety of residents and visitors is a top priority.

The following is cellphone video of the physical attacks:

As investigators comb through hours of footage, the chief indicated more arrests are likely as detectives identify suspects. Camacho noted that what appears on social media is often a short clip that doesn’t capture the full timeline, and he urged patience while the department conducts a full review. He also said the department plans to meet with community leaders to find solutions to recurring juvenile unrest.

The chief said the department has already made policy changes in how officers respond to calls involving juveniles, including requiring higher-ranking officers — corporals, sergeants or lieutenants — to respond to certain juvenile-related calls in an effort to lower the temperature of those interactions.

Community figures praised officers for restraint under extreme pressure, pointing out that no one suffered life-threatening injuries despite the chaos. One local advocate specifically commended an officer who chose not to draw her weapon, calling that restraint notable in such a volatile moment. Still, leaders agreed the incident highlights a need for greater neighborhood cooperation and stronger on-the-ground planning for large gatherings.

The violence we witnessed in North Charleston is unacceptable. There is no place in South Carolina for mob violence or attacks on law enforcement.

Anyone who assaults a police officer, fires a weapon into a crowd, or threatens public safety should be arrested, prosecuted, and held fully accountable.

South Carolina is a state of law and order. We will not tolerate mob rule.

Officials are encouraging anyone with information about the shootings or assaults to contact law enforcement and assist with the investigation. The department emphasized that community cooperation will be crucial to preventing repeat incidents and to holding accountable anyone who breaks the law. Police leaders make clear they want to work with residents to keep public events safe while ensuring officers can respond effectively when situations turn dangerous.
