An elderly Air Force veteran was attacked and robbed after using an ATM at a Pearland, Texas store, and cellphone video later showed a juvenile taking the victim’s wallet as the community and police worked through a fast-moving investigation.
The 79-year-old man told reporters he thought using the ATM inside the store would be safer, but he suspected someone had been watching him before the assault. He said he was attacked just after exiting the Walgreens and that he sustained only minor injuries. That he walked away alive is small comfort when a violent theft targets someone who served his country.
Surveillance and bystander video captured the final moments of the incident, showing the victim on the pavement in a parking space and a juvenile taking his wallet. Pearland police later confirmed the person visible in the footage is a juvenile and said they removed the video from their public feed because of the suspect’s age. Investigators emphasized the case remains active as officers try to take the juvenile into custody.
Officers were called to the Walgreens on Shadow Creek Parkway on June 19 after a robbery report, and the initial inquiry revealed the victim had just completed a cash withdrawal at a nearby ATM. As he returned to his vehicle, an individual approached and suddenly attacked him, leaving him injured and without the money he’d just withdrawn. Police described the victim as shaken but thankful the physical harm was limited.
The suspect seen by investigators was described as a black male wearing a white shirt and black pants who engaged the man immediately after he left the store. Police said the attacker caused bodily injury and then took the wallet and the cash from the victim. The swift, close-up nature of the assault suggests planning and an eye on vulnerable people using cash.
Detectives didn’t stop at the juvenile seen in video. They identified and arrested two adults they say were linked to the robbery: one man they say drove the getaway vehicle and another who acted as a lookout. Donte Belle, 30, of Houston, is charged with aggravated robbery and is accused of serving as the driver in the operation. Demondtra Moore, 23, of Houston, is also charged with aggravated robbery and is accused of keeping watch while the robbery occurred.
The Pearland Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit in the Criminal Investigations Division is continuing to dig into the details and look for any additional suspects or evidence. Detectives are piecing together how the group operated and whether this was an isolated incident or part of a pattern. Community safety officials say they will pursue leads and hold anyone responsible accountable under the law.
Neighbors and online viewers reacted strongly after footage of the scene circulated, with many expressing anger and concern about the targeting of seniors. A number of commenters said they were shocked the attack happened at a busy retail location and questioned what could be done to prevent similar robberies. The exchange of opinions online underscores how these crimes touch people beyond the immediate victim.
‘How scary!! I know where this was. I go there when I come into town. But …’
The online clip shows the veteran lying in a parking spot with bystanders nearby as the scene unfolds, and community members later identified elements of the location. Police removed the clip from their social media because the suspect is a juvenile, but multiple copies and eyewitness accounts circulated quickly. That spread speaks to both the concern of residents and the speed at which incidents are shared in a connected community.
A few reactions that circulated online included sharp calls for justice and raw frustration at the vulnerability exposed by the attack. One voice called for harsh consequences for those responsible, while another expressed a wish that the victim had been armed. Those comments reflect a wider debate about public safety, deterrence, and how to protect seniors in everyday settings.
Police encourage anyone with additional information about this incident to step forward and share what they know with investigators so the case can move forward. Authorities continue to ask witnesses and those with footage to preserve evidence that could help identify other people involved or clarify the sequence of events. For now, the community is left sorting through shock, a sense of violation, and a hope that law enforcement will complete the work needed to bring answers.
