Fauci Linked To Wuhan Funding, Gabbard Declassifies Files

Tulsi Gabbard used her final days in office to declassify a stack of documents that shift the conversation about COVID-19, funding, and intelligence oversight. The files pin awkward questions on Anthony Fauci, show agency influence inside the intelligence community, and have Republicans saying transparency finally won one.

Gabbard notified President Donald Trump late last month that she was resigning as director of national intelligence, and she left with a folder that changed the narrative for many conservatives. In her closing actions she released materials she says reveal how decisions at the highest levels shaped public messaging and funding lines tied to risky research.

The ODNI release claims to expose “how Dr. Fauci provided millions in U.S. taxpayer dollars to fund dangerous gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab, worked with politicized elements within the Intelligence Community to suppress the truth about his actions and hide the virus’ lab-leak origins, and lied to Congress while under oath in 2024.” These are big allegations and they landed as Gabbard walked out the door.

The declassified files, according to the office that released them, also document whistleblower complaints about retaliation against analysts who pushed back on the favored zoonotic narrative. That pushback, they say, shows why many in the intelligence community were uneasy with how research funding and public messaging were handled during the height of the pandemic. The documents paint a picture of influence that reached from grant offices to talking points in the media.

  • “Fauci funded risky coronavirus research linked to big pharma and the pursuit of ‘universal vaccines’ worth trillions of dollars”;
  • “Fauci was the behind-the-scenes adviser who, with his hand-picked experts, pushed the IC to endorse a natural, animal origin to hide his dangerous research”; and
  • “Fauci became the nation’s pandemic ‘pundit’ and publicly pushed lies, disinformation, and censorship.”

Federal paperwork had already shown that NIAID and USAID funneled money through EcoHealth Alliance to teams working on coronaviruses, with one subcontractor’s work totaling tens of millions. Ben Hu is named among investigators tied to those grants and is reported to have been a lead on gain-of-function work at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Those funding lines and personnel links are now central to the debate over responsibility and oversight.

Publicly, Fauci pushed an animal-to-human spillover theory and backed a high-profile paper titled The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2 that bolstered that narrative. Internal critics and some congressional investigators later argued that the paper and the surrounding messaging helped blunt scrutiny of laboratory-based explanations. That dispute over the dominant story set up a long political fight about truth, accountability, and who gets to decide which explanations are public.

Complicating prospects for legal action, a statute of limitations tied to alleged false testimony in 2021 reportedly expired recently, and the subject of these documents now has protections that block immediate criminal processes. A presidential pardon further clouds any attempt to move against him, and federal officials were tight-lipped or silent when asked for comment. That combination leaves Congress and the public with documents and few immediate enforcement options.

“The COVID-19 pandemic caused tremendous hardship and pain for millions of our fellow Americans and for countless people around the world. After years of lies, censorship, and cover-ups, the American people deserve transparency, truth, and accountability,” Gabbard said in a statement.

“The tactics used to hide the truth are straight from the deep state playbook: Politicized self-serving leaders like Dr. Fauci covered up their own wrongdoing and abuses of power, manipulated intelligence, lied to Congress, and undermined a duly elected president by restricting his access to vital facts needed to keep the country safe,” continued the departing DNI. “It’s time the American people learn the real story.”

Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.), who has pushed for criminal referrals in related matters before, was among those who welcomed the release and praised Gabbard for pressing forward despite political heat. He Gabbard “for her leadership and service in pursuing the truth, even when it wasn’t politically convenient.”

What happens next is likely to be political and procedural rather than criminal for now: committee hearings, further document requests, and a continued public campaign to make these records stick. Republicans will use the files to argue the system protected insiders and silenced dissent, and the battle over what the public gets to know is far from over.
