ICE Officer Injured When Fleeing Van Strikes, Suspect Sought

An ICE agent was struck during an arrest attempt in Stafford Township, New Jersey, when the subject drove away in a van and hit one of the officers; the agent fired at the vehicle, the suspect remains at large, and the FBI has taken over the inquiry. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, and local officials are weighing the limits of state policy alongside federal enforcement actions. The injured officer is expected to recover, while law enforcement continues to search for the van and the man identified by ICE as the target of the arrest. This incident has sparked debate about the safety of agents and the boundaries of local cooperation with federal immigration efforts.

ICE agents were attempting to take custody of Friedrich Castillo-Ormeno of Peru on a public roadway in the Manahawkin area when the encounter escalated around midmorning. Authorities say Castillo-Ormeno had already been ordered removed from the country, and the arrest operation moved forward on Route 72. Video and witness accounts show a tense approach that quickly turned violent when the driver fled in a van and struck an officer. The injured agent returned fire toward the vehicle during the confrontation.

“They tell him to roll down his window; he’s inching forward, and you can tell it’s getting tense by his inching forward,” said Payton Johnson, a resident of the township. “As soon as he gunned it, you just see the the front of the van, pin the lower half of the officer’s body into the officer’s car,” he added. “You just see the guy’s body just get twisted and mangled, and in that twist, you know, he then pulled out his gun and shot at the van.”

Police confirmed the van left the scene and remains under active search by federal and local partners, though Stafford Township police say they were not conducting the ICE operation. The township officers assisted with traffic control and secured the area while federal agents led the arrest attempt. New Jersey’s Immigrant Trust Directive limits certain cooperative actions by local police with federal immigration officers, a policy that shapes how these scenes are managed on the ground. That tension between local directives and federal authority is now part of the story people in the neighborhood are talking about.

The officer who was struck is expected to recover, officials said, but the incident highlights the risks ICE personnel face when they carry out arrests on public streets. From a Republican perspective, this is a reminder that enforcing the law has real dangers and that agents deserve clear backing and protection when they act under proper authority. Supporters argue that when removal orders are in place, federal officers must be able to perform their duties without political interference that undermines public safety.

Law enforcement sources conveyed that shots were fired at the fleeing van, possibly damaging the rear window and slowing the vehicle’s escape, though the exact sequence is under FBI review. The FBI has taken over the investigation to ensure a federal-level, comprehensive probe into the shooting, the injury, and the subsequent search for the suspect. Federal oversight is intended to provide an impartial accounting of what happened and to coordinate the hunt for Castillo-Ormeno. Meanwhile, community members remain shaken by a violent encounter that played out in broad daylight.

“ICE agents put their lives on the line every day to enforce our nation’s laws and protect our communities,” Republican Rep. Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey said in a statement. “Yet too many politicians and activists continue to demonize them for doing the job they are sworn to do,” he added. “This incident is a reminder of the dangers these brave men and women face. I am grateful the agent is expected to recover, and I will always stand with ICE and law enforcement.”

Investigators are canvassing the area for surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to piece together how the vehicle got away and whether additional charges should be brought. Officials have described the suspect and the vehicle and have asked anyone with information to contact federal authorities. The search continues while the community seeks answers about how an arrest turned into a hit-and-run that injured a federal agent. Local leaders and residents alike are demanding clarity and accountability as the federal inquiry moves forward.

For now, the focus is on the wounded agent’s recovery and the ongoing manhunt for the van and driver. Authorities want to ensure there are no further public safety risks and to recover a suspect who allegedly ignored a removal order and used a vehicle to flee. The case touches on broader debates about enforcement, public safety, and the role of local policy in federal immigration operations. As the FBI works through the facts, many in the area are calling for firm support for law enforcement actions that keep communities safe.
