DuckDuckGo Gains Users As Google Pushes AI, Privacy Concerns Rise

Google’s recent pivot toward AI in search has nudged a noticeable group of users toward DuckDuckGo, a privacy-first alternative that lets people control whether AI touches their queries; this piece explains why that matters and walks you through switching your phone’s default search engine across popular browsers.

For years Google set the standard for finding things online, but the company has been steering search into an AI-centered direction and many users are not thrilled. People who preferred predictable, straightforward search results began looking for options that prioritize privacy and user choice. That shift opened a window for DuckDuckGo to step back into the conversation as a simpler, less intrusive way to search.

DuckDuckGo, around since 2008, markets itself on privacy and a clean experience without user profiling. It does not harvest or sell search histories and it avoids building detailed ad-driven profiles, which appeals to anyone tired of being tracked. The engine aims to deliver answers without inserting algorithmic bias or heavy-handed personalization into every result.

Part of DuckDuckGo’s appeal right now is that it gives users the choice to use or opt out of AI features rather than forcing AI into the foreground. That distinction matters: some users want AI assistance, others want classic search behavior, and DuckDuckGo makes that a user decision. According to , installs of its app jumped notably in the United States as people tested alternatives to an AI-first Google.

Context matters here. DuckDuckGo still holds a small slice of the overall search market, while Google remains the giant of the industry. But even a modest jump in adoption sends a message that when a dominant platform drifts away from what made it valuable to many users, competitors can gain traction quickly. Market shifts rarely happen overnight, yet attention and user trust can move faster than corporate roadmaps.

If you want to try DuckDuckGo on your phone, changing the default search engine is straightforward and reversible. On iPhone, open Settings and find the list of apps, then select Safari. Under the Search section pick Search Engine and swap Google for DuckDuckGo to make it the default for Safari queries.

On Android with Chrome, open the Chrome app and tap the three-dot menu, then choose Settings. Under Basics select Search Engine and choose DuckDuckGo instead of Google to route your Chrome searches away from Google’s engine. Chrome on iPhone follows a similar path: open the app, tap the menu, go to Settings, then Search Engine, and switch to DuckDuckGo.

Microsoft’s Edge lets you change the default on both platforms too. On Edge for Android open the app, tap the bottom menu, then go to Settings and Search to select DuckDuckGo in place of Bing. Edge on iPhone uses the same Settings then Search steps, so switching to DuckDuckGo works the same way across both devices.

Brave is already tuned toward privacy and makes DuckDuckGo quick to set up. In Brave on Android tap the three-dot menu, open Settings, and under General choose Search Engines to set DuckDuckGo for both standard and private tabs. Brave on iPhone uses the All Settings area under the three-dot menu and the same Search Engines option to do the swap.

Firefox provides separate defaults for normal and private browsing and lets you change both easily. In Firefox on Android access the three-dot menu, open Settings, tap Search under General, and set the Default search engine to DuckDuckGo. Firefox on iPhone follows those same steps through the bottom menu, giving you consistent control on either device.

Switching takes a few taps and you can always revert if you miss the old behavior, so experimenting is low risk. If privacy and choice over AI involvement in results matter to you, trying DuckDuckGo for a week or two will quickly reveal whether it fits your browsing habits. Happy Duck hunting!
