DOJ Opens Multiple Election Fraud Probes In California

Federal prosecutors have quietly opened multiple election-fraud probes in California as slow ballot counts keep key races unresolved, and acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli says his office and the FBI are on the case. The announcement underscores a larger argument from Republicans that California’s vote-by-mail system lacks basic safeguards and invites scrutiny. With the Los Angeles mayoral and California governor primaries still unsettled, the stakes are high and legal scrutiny is intensifying. This story tracks the investigations, the official statements, and the political trouble that comes with delayed results.

Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli announced that his office, working with the FBI, had opened “multiple election fraud investigations.” He offered no play-by-play on allegations, but the declaration itself signals federal involvement where many voters expected only state oversight. That step alone ratchets up pressure on local officials to be transparent about procedures and timelines.

‘We will investigate and prosecute. Every legal vote deserves to be counted. Every illegal vote cancels one out.’ That line came directly from Essayli and it sets a firm tone: investigations are not a political stunt, they are a promise to enforce the law. Republican voters who worry about ballots slipping through the cracks will hear that as reassurance that someone is watching the process.

“Protecting the integrity of California’s elections is a top priority for my office,” said Essayli in the post on social media. “California’s election system has serious structural vulnerabilities. Universal vote-by-mail with no voter ID requirements creates conditions where fraud can go undetected and unpunished, eroding public confidence.” Those words lay out the core complaint — a system designed for accessibility has, in the eyes of these prosecutors, traded away basic verification and invited skepticism.

The delayed tally in two high-profile contests has fueled political heat. Critics accuse Democrats of gaming the slow process to their advantage while other observers point out that prioritizing ballot access can mean accepting slower results. Either way, the extended counting window keeps candidates and voters in limbo and hands more opportunity to skeptics demanding audits and transparency.

Republican hopefuls currently sitting ahead include Steve Hilton in the governor’s race and Spencer Pratt in the Los Angeles mayoral contest, but thin margins and late batches of ballots could reshuffle the top two. California’s top-two system makes every late tranche of votes potentially decisive, and that uncertainty is exactly what has people calling for federal scrutiny and cleaner voter rolls. Candidates on both sides are watching the count with legal teams on standby.

“We will follow the evidence wherever it leads and prosecute any violations of federal election law to the fullest extent,” Essayli added. He also said his team was working toward a comprehensive audit of voter rolls and accused the state of blocking efforts to confirm only eligible U.S. citizens are registered to vote. The dispute has escalated into litigation now before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal, putting the question of verification into judges’ hands.

Video from L.A. County’s central processing center showed an official from the U.S. Attorney General’s Office and monitoring the effort. The presence of federal observers moves this beyond routine oversight into formal scrutiny that can produce subpoenas, audits, or prosecutions if warranted.

“My office will not look the other way,” Essayli concluded. “We will investigate and prosecute. Every legal vote deserves to be counted. Every illegal vote cancels one out.” On the public stage, even California’s governor acknowledged frustration: “For the record: we wish the votes were counted faster, too.” Meanwhile, California Attorney General Rob Bonta said simply, “My office has a presence on the ground right now, is monitoring the situation closely, and stands ready to protect voters and ensure California’s election laws are followed,” he wrote, signaling cooperation even as the federal probe proceeds.
