MLB Umpire Chases Teen, Assaulted During Philadelphia Phone Theft

A Major League Baseball umpire chased and wrestled with a teenager who allegedly snatched his phone on a Philadelphia street in April, leading to a brief but violent scuffle that left the umpire with non-life-threatening injuries and police searching for the suspect.

Authorities identified the official as Brock Ballou, an MLB umpire on the job since 2022, who was reportedly consulting his phone for directions when the incident began. The episode unfolded in the 1600 block of Walnut Street around 7 p.m., and it quickly turned physical after the alleged theft.

Police say the suspect approached Ballou from behind and grabbed the phone out of his hands before taking off on foot. Ballou chased after the teen, and the pair collided at the corner of 16th and Walnut, according to law enforcement accounts and surveillance footage reviewed by investigators.

“They ended up on the ground, at which time the victim struck his head, causing injury. The male continued his assault, violently punching him.” The clip reviewed by police shows repeated punches and a chaotic struggle as bystanders moved around the scene.

Officials released surveillance footage to the public to aid identification, confirming the suspect’s actions and the general sequence of events. The visual material played a key role in piecing together how the snatch escalated into a confrontation and how the suspect fled the spot without securing the phone.

Police described the suspect as a teenage male with a brown complexion wearing a light blue sweatshirt and black pants. That description, coupled with the video, forms the basis of the active search as detectives urge anyone with tips to come forward.

Ballou did not sustain serious injuries, authorities said, and his phone was eventually returned to him by a person on the street after the suspect fled. Even so, the physical blows left the umpire with a head injury that prompted an immediate police report and follow-up by detectives.

Ballou remained on assignment in Philadelphia for the Phillies vs. Diamondbacks series and continued to work the games after the incident, covering first base the night after and then taking the plate two days later. League officials have been contacted about the incident, though MLB did not provide a comment to investigators at the time of the report.

In the minutes before the street confrontation, police said the same suspect allegedly entered a nearby convenience store and took several items. An employee who confronted the teen was reportedly punched multiple times before the suspect fled that scene, creating a pattern of alleged behavior that investigators linked to both incidents.

Detectives are treating the two episodes as related and are appealing directly to the public for assistance in identifying the teen captured on camera. Anyone with information relevant to the two robberies or the assaults is being asked to contact the department’s central detective unit to help move the case forward.

The situation has generated attention because it involves a high-profile sports official and because surveillance footage clearly documents the escalation from theft to violence. Police continue to examine the video and follow leads as they seek to establish the full timeline and motive behind the alleged crimes.

It is past time to start prosecuting these “teens” as adults. No more expunging their records once turning 18 years of age! If you don’t believe one of these “teens” can’t kill you, impossible to do, but if you could, consult one of those folk sucker punched in that ‘knock-out’ game(?) that resulted in their DEATHS! As is said far too often in America today, “You Just Can’t Make This Schiff Up.”
