DHS Confirms ICE Arrest, Debunks Democrat Racism Claim

The Department of Homeland Security publicly pushed back after Wisconsin Democrats raised alarms over the detention of Salah Sarsour, a long-time local resident and mosque leader, and the dispute exposes a raw clash between claims of civil rights concerns and law enforcement’s national security assertions. Local activists and Sen. Tammy Baldwin argued the move looked like political or religious targeting, while DHS and ICE say their case rests on criminal history and alleged immigration fraud. The situation has split the community between calls for answers and calls for stricter enforcement. This story tracks the political fallout, the government response, and the human details at the center of the controversy.

The initial report noted that Sarsour had been a legal permanent resident for more than three decades, which fed disbelief among supporters who see him as a fixture in Milwaukee. Local activists immediately framed the arrest as part of a pattern, suggesting the federal action was aimed at pro-Palestinian organizers. “They want to criminalize advocacy for Palestine,” said Othman Atta, another leader at the mosque, at a rally to oppose the detention. “That is the only reason that he is being targeted. There is nothing else.”

Baldwin seized on the story and pushed a strong accusation against ICE, arguing the detention was unfair and politically motivated. Her comments landed quickly in the public conversation and intensified the push for answers from federal authorities.

“Salah is here lawfully and has been a productive member of our community for 30 years,” . “This looks like ICE targeting someone because of their skin color or what they believe — and that is not the American way. This doesn’t make us safer. We need answers why ICE targeted Salah.”

Within hours DHS provided a different frame, outlining criminal allegations and immigration irregularities that they say justified the detention. “ICE arrested a Jordanian national with a prior conviction for THROWING A MOLOTOV COCKTAIL at the homes of Israeli Forces,” DHS on social media. “He lied on his immigration application and became a green card holder under President Clinton,” the department added. “This terrorist will remain in ICE custody pending removal proceedings.”

That blunt government language landed hard in a community already on edge, forcing residents to reconfront the facts behind the government’s claims. Supporters highlighted his family ties and business ownership, while federal officials emphasized the criminal record and alleged false statements on immigration paperwork as the legal basis for proceedings.

Atta pointed out the human cost of the action, noting a family suddenly facing separation and a community worried about broader chilling effects. He said Sarsour’s wife and six children are U.S. citizens and argued that authorities had long been aware of the Israeli arrest history dating back to Sarsour’s immigration in 1993. “He is being deported because he’s exercising his right of freedom of speech,” Atta added.

Sarsour’s profile in Milwaukee mixes civic involvement and small-business ownership, and defenders argue those facts contradict the federal portrait. He reportedly owns at least three furniture stores in the area, and his son described him as a pillar of the local community, spotlighting the tension between the man people know and the allegations officials released.

The episode shows how immigration enforcement actions can quickly become political flashpoints, with elected officials, activists, and federal agencies trading sharply different narratives. For Republicans and many supporters of strict enforcement, the core question is whether national security and immigration law were properly applied, while critics worry about motive and community impact. Neither side is likely to back down as the removal proceedings move forward and public statements keep the story alive in local debate.

In the weeks ahead, legal filings and administrative hearings will determine whether DHS can carry out the removal it announced or whether advocates can force a different outcome through the courts. Meanwhile, the dispute has already reshaped conversations in Milwaukee about immigration policy, community safety, and how much trust residents can place in federal claims when they collide with local reputations.
