Experts Urge Vaccination, Parents Protect Families From Contagious Flu

The U.S. is deep into flu season with H3N2 subclade K prominent, and health experts are stressing vaccination, staying home when ill, hand hygiene, masking in public, and early antiviral treatment when appropriate. This article explains how long someone with influenza can spread the virus, who is likely to be contagious longer, and practical steps to reduce transmission. It includes direct guidance from clinicians about timing, symptoms, and when to return to normal activity.

Reports show “moderate to very high activity” of influenza-like illness across many states, and clinicians say that a sharper H3N2 strain is driving more intense symptoms this season. Subclade K has been noted in rising global cases and appears to spread readily in communities already facing seasonal pressures. Health professionals are urging people to treat this season seriously while using familiar prevention tools.

“It’s becoming evident that this is a pretty severe variant of the flu,” Dr. Neil Maniar, professor of public health practice, said when discussing the subclade’s impact. “Certainly, in other parts of the world where this variant has been prevalent, it’s caused some severe illness, and we’re seeing an aggressive flu season already.” “The vaccine still provides protection against serious illness resulting from the subclade K variant that seems to be going around,” he added.

On contagiousness, “You are typically contagious with the flu for five to seven days after symptoms start,” according to Dr. Samantha Picking, a senior immunizations director. “However, some groups remain contagious for longer periods. Young children and people with weakened immune systems can spread the virus for more than seven days, sometimes extending to two weeks or longer.”

People often assume they only spread flu once symptoms begin, but that is not true. “The flu is most contagious during the first three to four days after symptoms appear,” Picking said, and “However, you can begin spreading the virus a day before feeling ill and may remain contagious for up to a week or longer.” That early contagious window is why exposure can be hard to track.

The incubation period usually runs about two days, though it can be as short as one day or stretch to four days, which explains why outbreaks can pop up quickly in tight-knit groups. Even those with mild symptoms can transmit the virus, so casual appearances of wellness don’t guarantee safety for others. Keep this in mind when deciding whether to head to work, school, or public spaces.

Picking recommends practical precautions for anyone sick or exposed. “To be safe and prevent spreading the virus, stay home until you’re fever-free for at least 24 hours without using fever-reducing medicine,” she advised. “For most healthy adults, this typically corresponds to five to seven days after symptoms begin.”

When you start feeling better, consider masking for a few extra days to lower the chance of passing the virus to people at higher risk. “However, use your best judgment and consult a healthcare professional if you’re unsure whether you’re well enough to leave the house,” she added. “If your other symptoms aren’t improving, or you generally still feel ill, it’s wise to stay home and practice good hand hygiene.”

Young children and immunocompromised people may remain contagious far longer than healthy adults, sometimes up to 14 days, so extra caution around those groups is important. A cough can linger for weeks after other symptoms clear, and while that lingering cough is not necessarily a sign of contagiousness, “While a lingering cough is not necessarily a sign that you’re still contagious, it’s considerate to mask up and practice good cough etiquette when around others,” Picking advised.

Antiviral medications can reduce how long someone spreads the flu if started early. “These medications work best when started within two days of seeing symptoms,” Picking noted, so speak with a clinician or pharmacist quickly if you meet criteria for treatment. Flu symptoms can include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, cough, sore throat and runny nose, and recognized treatment windows make timely care meaningful.
