Zillow’s New AI Staging Feature: Surprisingly Underwhelming

Zillow is introducing a new AI-powered tool designed to assist home buyers in visualizing a property’s potential. This feature, called Virtual Staging, allows users to remove existing furniture or alter the design style, helping buyers see beyond the current decor.

The aim of this tool is to address a common issue faced by home seekers. Amanda Pendleton, a Zillow home trends expert, noted, “Too many buyers overlook what could be the perfect home for their family simply because they can’t see past the furniture or design choices.”

While the concept of Virtual Staging is promising, its current phase leaves much to be desired. The adjustments made by the tool are quite subtle, often limited to small changes like moving a chair or altering the color of a rug.

Users may find it difficult to notice any significant changes, as the differences can be minimal. Without clear indicators of the alterations, it’s easy to miss how the space has been transformed.

Zillow describes this feature as a “smarter way to shop” for homes. This new addition follows their upgraded AI search feature from last year, which aims to enhance the home-buying experience.

However, access to Virtual Staging will be restricted to premium “Showcase” listings. Even within this category, the feature will apply only to “select featured room photos,” limiting its overall impact.

The examples currently available tend to feature basic settings, often with plain white walls. This minimalist approach may not fully showcase the potential of each space, leaving some buyers wanting more variety.

Despite its limitations, the tool represents a step in the right direction for Zillow. The company is striving to help buyers better visualize their future homes, even if the execution needs improvement.

As the technology evolves, there’s hope that Virtual Staging will become more sophisticated. For now, it serves as a helpful yet basic tool for those navigating the complex world of home buying.
