A Michigan mother faces heartache once more after the teenager responsible for her son’s death in a 2023 car crash was spared prison time during sentencing. Grosse Pointe police were called to the scene on November 17, 2023, where they found the driver, Kiernan Tague, and the unresponsive passenger, Flynn MacKrell. Tague was accused of driving 100 mph in a 25-mph zone when he crashed into a telephone pole.

Initially charged with second-degree murder, Tague later pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to his age at the time of the incident. Despite the severity of the crime, he received a “blended sentence” last week, allowing him probation at a Level two placement facility. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy highlighted the reckless speed, saying it was more suited to highways than residential areas.

Flynn MacKrell’s mother, Anne Vanker, expressed her dismay on Facebook, criticizing the lenient sentence. In her post, she lamented the shielding of Tague from full accountability for his dangerous actions. She emphasized the failure of the justice system to deliver real consequences for her son’s death.

Vanker pointed out that pre-sentencing reports recommended adult sentencing, supported by overwhelming evidence. Despite this, the court prioritized leniency over justice, leaving the family to continue their battle for stronger laws. Vanker insisted her family would never cease advocating for Flynn and other victims of preventable tragedies.

In court, Vanker shared a victim impact statement, remembering her son as a cherished individual and a true gift. She described Tague’s behavior as increasingly violent and dismissive of authority and law. According to her, Tague has never shown remorse or acknowledged the gravity of his actions.

Tague’s troubled history includes 20 police incidents since 2018, many prompted by his mother’s calls for help. His prior driving records reveal a pattern of extreme speeds, reaching as high as 155 mph. The Life360 app used by Tague’s family also documented his reckless driving habits.

Data from the app showed a series of high-speed trips leading up to the crash, with some reaching over 120 mph. Vanker highlighted these findings to underscore the need for accountability and justice. The data painted a picture of neglect and disregard for public safety.

During his sentencing, Tague expressed deep remorse for his actions, referring to Flynn as his best friend. He acknowledged his grief and regret but recognized the profound loss experienced by Flynn’s family. Tague’s words, however, offered little solace to those left grieving.

Vanker’s statement in court resonated with many, as she shared the profound impact of losing her son so tragically. Her determination to seek justice and advocate for change remains unwavering. The family’s resolve serves as a testament to their love for Flynn and their commitment to ensuring his voice is heard.

As this case unfolds, it highlights the complexities within the justice system when dealing with young offenders. The blend of accountability and leniency in sentencing raises questions about the balance of justice and rehabilitation. For Flynn’s family, the journey for meaningful justice continues.

The case also underscores the importance of adhering to traffic laws designed to protect communities. Speed limits are not mere suggestions but essential rules for safeguarding lives. Flynn’s tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless driving.

The story of Flynn MacKrell and Kiernan Tague will continue to echo throughout communities advocating for change. The legal outcomes and personal testimonies serve as a catalyst for discussions on justice, accountability, and public safety. Flynn’s legacy, cherished by his family, will drive efforts to prevent similar tragedies.
