A baby in Denver County, Colorado, recently came down with measles, according to state health officials. The child, under one year old, was unvaccinated because of their age. This case surfaced after the infant traveled internationally to Chihuahua, Mexico, where a measles outbreak is currently active.

This marks Colorado’s second confirmed measles case of 2025, with the first one reported in Pueblo. The two cases are unrelated, as officials have pointed out. Dr. Rachel Herlihy, a state epidemiologist, emphasized the vulnerability of infants under 12 months, stating they are too young to receive the vaccine.

Dr. Herlihy also advised families planning international trips to consider delaying unnecessary travel or discussing early MMR vaccination with their healthcare providers, especially when heading to areas experiencing measles outbreaks. Measles initially presents with symptoms like fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. Over time, a facial rash develops, spreading across the body.

Colorado health officials have issued a warning for anyone who visited the Denver Health Emergency Department on April 6, between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. They should watch for symptoms and avoid crowded places if they haven’t been vaccinated. The MMR vaccine can prevent measles if administered within 72 hours of exposure.

Health experts note that symptoms generally appear seven to 21 days after coming into contact with the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends two doses of the MMR vaccine for children. The first dose is given between 12 and 15 months, and the second between 4 and 6 years.

As of early April, the CDC confirmed 607 measles cases across 22 states, including California, New York, and Texas. This number highlights the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of this highly contagious disease. Health authorities continue to stress the need for vaccination to protect vulnerable populations, especially young children.

The current measles situation in the U.S. serves as a reminder of the disease’s reach and potential impact. Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent the spread of measles, safeguarding both individuals and communities. With outbreaks occurring globally, staying informed and taking preventive measures is crucial.

The rise in measles cases has prompted health officials to increase public awareness and encourage vaccination. The goal is to prevent further outbreaks and protect those who cannot be vaccinated due to age or medical conditions. As more information becomes available, authorities continue to provide updates and guidance to the public.

In this climate of heightened health awareness, it’s important for families to stay vigilant and proactive about vaccinations. Protecting our communities from preventable diseases like measles is a shared responsibility. By keeping informed and following health guidelines, we can work together to maintain public health.

The ongoing situation with measles underscores the significance of vaccination programs and public health initiatives. As we navigate these challenges, the role of healthcare providers and public health officials remains vital. Ensuring access to accurate information and resources will help in the fight against measles and other infectious diseases.
