Fans of HBO’s “The White Lotus” might recognize Victoria from her distinct southern accent, luxurious silk robes, and her reliance on lorazepam. After a particular episode showcased its use—perhaps more accurately, its misuse—Google searches for this anti-anxiety medication shot up. Victoria Ratliff, portrayed by Parker Posey, is often seen popping these pills throughout the day.

When asked about her medication, Ratliff explains to her family that she takes it for anxiety. But when she’s suddenly without her lorazepam, she delivers a memorable line: “I don’t even have my lorazepam. I’m going to have to drink myself to sleep.” Actress Parker Posey attended the Season 3 premiere of “The White Lotus” in Bangkok on February 14, 2025.

So, what exactly is lorazepam? It’s a type of benzodiazepine that calms the brain, helping people to relax, according to MedlinePlus. It’s commonly used to alleviate anxiety and insomnia caused by stress, which is relatable to Mrs. Ratliff’s family vacation situation. In hospitals, lorazepam is sometimes administered to help patients relax before surgeries, as noted by Healthline.

However, lorazepam’s side effects aren’t to be taken lightly. Chelsie Rohrscheib, a neuroscientist and sleep expert, explained to Fox News Digital that it could cause dizziness, confusion, memory issues, and slowed breathing, especially when combined with other sedatives like alcohol. “This class of drug is extremely habit-forming,” she mentioned, warning about dependency and withdrawal symptoms.

Rohrscheib also pointed out that lorazepam could negatively affect mood and increase depression risk. “There is also clinical evidence that long-term use of these medications is associated with certain diseases, like neurodegenerative disorders, such as dementia,” she added. Mixing lorazepam with opiates can heighten the risk of severe or life-threatening issues.

Studies suggest that prolonged use of lorazepam might lead to memory loss, trouble forming new memories, and issues with focus and problem-solving. The dangers of combining it with other medications can include serious breathing problems, as MedlinePlus highlights. “This class of drug is extremely habit-forming,” Rohrscheib reiterated.

In “The White Lotus,” characters seem to use lorazepam primarily as a sleep aid, blending it with alcohol, which poses significant dangers. Mrs. Ratliff often enjoys glasses of wine in many of her scenes. Experts caution against consuming lorazepam with alcohol due to potential breathing difficulties or trouble waking up.

The drug isn’t available over the counter, and in the show, Mrs. Ratliff makes sure to refill her prescription before going on vacation. Anyone considering lorazepam should consult a healthcare professional to see if it’s appropriate and safe for them.

For those dealing with insomnia, making lifestyle adjustments and considering cognitive behavioral therapy might be better initial steps than turning to lorazepam, Rohrscheib advised. “Doctors may consider alternatives, such as over-the-counter, non-benzodiazepine medications or supplements that promote sleep, such as melatonin,” she shared with Fox News Digital.

Clémence Cavaillès, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, has suggested maintaining consistent sleep patterns and creating an optimal sleep environment to combat insomnia. Regular physical activity and exposure to natural light can also enhance sleep quality. Avoiding screens, blue light, caffeine, and alcohol before bed can be beneficial.

Incorporating relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation can prepare the body for sleep, Cavaillès added. Fox News Digital reached out to the company behind a branded lorazepam medication for comments.
