In the wake of the devastation in Pacific Palisades, a recall petition against Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has emerged, driven by local residents frustrated with her leadership.
This initiative isn’t limited to one political party; it includes two Democrats, two Republicans, and one independent, all expressing dissatisfaction.
The residents criticized Bass for abandoning the city during extreme fire warnings to attend events overseas, leaving emergency officials to manage the crisis alone.
Mayor Bass was in Ghana for a presidential inauguration as part of a delegation from the Biden administration. She left just before the fires ignited and returned only after the damage had been done. Although her office had been warned of the potential dangers, Bass is now calling for an investigation into why she was allowed to travel.
Among the notable backers of this recall effort is Nicole Shanahan, a recent Democrat and former vice-presidential candidate with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
The recall notice points out a pattern of failures, citing rising crime, unchecked theft, and expanding homeless encampments despite substantial spending. The statement from the petitioners argues that it’s time for a change in leadership.
Initiating this recall are Pacific Palisades residents Gelena Wasserman, Heather Marie Hilterbrand, and Sarah Jane Peterson, along with Susan Collins from Sherman Oaks and Jonathan Sebastian Garcia Ramirez from Brentwood.
A Los Angeles Times poll reveals that the city is divided on Bass’s handling of the wildfires, with many lacking confidence in her recovery plans. Forty-one percent of residents rated her response as poor, while another 41% considered it fair to excellent.
The poll also showed that 54% of respondents have little faith in Bass’s ability to guide the city’s recovery. Only 34% expressed some or a great deal of confidence in her leadership. When asked specifically about her wildfire response, 28% rated it as very poor, and just 6% deemed it excellent.
In terms of confidence in recovery, 36% of people said they have not much faith in Bass. Conversely, a mere 11% of respondents stated they have a great deal of confidence in her.
Overall, these numbers portray a city with a significant number of residents holding a negative perception of Bass’s performance.
Despite these criticisms, Mayor Bass has remained silent on the recall but her political strategist, Douglas Herman, dismissed the effort.
He labeled it as “another extreme right-wing political stunt designed to divide Los Angeles.” Meanwhile, Bass has expressed her intentions to run for re-election in 2026.
During a radio interview on KNX, Bass made it clear she has no intentions of stepping down. “I would never quit on my city,” she affirmed with determination. Bass acknowledged the difficulties of her role but insisted she is prepared for the challenges ahead.
