Departing President Joe Biden recently addressed the State Department, reflecting on his administration’s foreign policy achievements. Throughout his speech, Biden emphasized how his presidency had positively influenced America’s global standing, though some of his assertions were met with skepticism. During his address, Biden employed a distinctive blend of whispering and passionate declarations that has become characteristic of his public speaking style.

When discussing the current state of Iran, Biden noted that the country is “weaker than it’s been in decades.” This statement is somewhat contentious, as critics argue that Iran’s weakened position resulted more from external factors than from Biden’s policies. Critics point to Biden’s efforts to lift sanctions, allow Iran to profit from oil sales, and encourage a return to the nuclear deal as measures that potentially benefited the Iranian regime. In contrast, it was Israel’s actions, despite Biden’s interventions, that significantly impacted Iran’s regional influence, particularly through targeting Iranian-backed forces.

Biden also mentioned the situation in Syria, attributing the downfall of the Assad regime to his administration’s policies. However, the collapse of Assad’s government was largely driven by a combination of Israeli military actions against Hezbollah and Iran, and the changing political landscape with the election of Donald Trump. These factors isolated Assad’s regime, leading to its eventual implosion. Biden’s role in these developments is viewed by some as peripheral.

The topic of Hamas and the potential release of hostages held since October 7 was another focal point of Biden’s address. With only days remaining in his presidency, Biden expressed optimism about the possibility of hostages being freed. However, this perspective is questioned by those who believe that the election of Trump and his administration’s hardline stance on Hamas were more influential in prompting negotiations for the hostages’ release. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had previously expressed concern that the administration’s prolonged pressure on Israel inadvertently bolstered Hamas’s resistance.

Reflecting on the withdrawal from Afghanistan, Biden highlighted his role in ending America’s longest war. He noted that he is the first president in decades not to pass the conflict on to a successor. The withdrawal from Afghanistan, however, is widely regarded as a chaotic and traumatic event for the U.S. military, marked by the loss of 13 service members. The hasty evacuation left behind substantial military equipment and raised questions about the administration’s planning and execution.

Biden’s commentary on Ukraine and Russia stirred further debate. He took credit for supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression, yet critics argue that the initial invasion by Russia was partially influenced by perceived weaknesses in American deterrence following the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Biden’s earlier comments about a potential “minor incursion” by Russia also raised concerns about the administration’s stance on defending Ukrainian sovereignty.

The complex history of U.S.-Russia relations includes Russia’s annexation of Crimea and actions in Donbass during the Obama-Biden administration. The attempted invasion of Kyiv occurred during Biden’s presidency, contrasting with the period of relative calm during Trump’s administration. These events highlight the intricacies of foreign policy and the challenges faced by successive administrations.

Biden asserted that his administration achieved these outcomes without resorting to military force. However, critics argue that his tenure saw a weakening of the U.S. military, both in terms of budget reductions and recruitment challenges. The implementation of strict vaccination mandates and policies perceived as politically motivated were cited as factors contributing to recruitment shortfalls, alongside accusations of fostering a divisive military culture.

China’s aggressive stance during Biden’s presidency was another point of contention. The administration faced challenges from China’s assertive actions toward Taiwan, cyber activities targeting the U.S., and the appropriation of American military technology. The incident involving a Chinese spy balloon traversing U.S. airspace without repercussion underscored concerns about national security.

Biden’s immigration policies also drew criticism, particularly regarding the increase in illegal border crossings during his tenure. Among these were numerous Chinese nationals, contributing to broader concerns about national security and the influence of Chinese investments in strategically sensitive areas of the U.S., including farmland near military bases.

In light of these complex geopolitical dynamics, Biden’s assertions of success have been met with mixed reactions. Some argue that his administration’s policies have left the U.S. in a more precarious position internationally. As Biden prepares to leave office, the legacy of his foreign policy decisions continues to be a topic of robust debate and analysis.
