The Biden administration is facing increasing scrutiny over its response to mysterious drone sightings over multiple states on the East Coast and beyond. While federal agencies have dismissed the sightings as no threat to public or national security, a military expert warns that these incidents expose glaring vulnerabilities in the United States’ ability to control its own airspace.
According to former U.S. Marine Col. William Dunn, a military aviation expert, the drones—regardless of their origin—highlight significant risks that adversaries could exploit. Dunn suggests that these drones, likely domestically launched, are conducting surveillance or searching for chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear threats.
Col. Dunn, a former attack helicopter pilot and president of the Strategic Resilience Group, shared his insights in an interview with Fox News. Drawing on his three decades of military experience, he expressed confidence that the drones are of U.S. origin.
“The concern is definitely valid,” Dunn said. “I believe the government knows the source of these drones, and I believe the source of these drones is from inside the U.S., especially the larger drones.”
He pointed out that it’s incredibly challenging for aircraft as large as some of these drones to cross U.S. borders undetected. “We have—especially on the East Coast—I’m very familiar with our air defense identification zone. It’s very difficult to fly anything into the United States. It’s not impossible, but it’s very difficult,” Dunn explained, adding that the drones’ need for refueling further supports the domestic origin theory.
Dunn speculated that the drones are on a mission to surveil specific targets, possibly scanning for chemical weapons, biological agents, radiation, or terrorist communications.
“They’re looking for something,” he said, while noting the heightened concern about an open southern border and an imminent terrorist threat.
However, he raised a more troubling concern: the signals these incidents send to adversary nations. “We are telegraphing right now that we do not know where these drones are. We’re telegraphing that we can fly these drones over U.S. bases and we can’t do anything about it,” Dunn warned.
This vulnerability, he argued, could embolden adversaries to deploy drones over critical infrastructure or military facilities to gather intelligence or conduct attacks.
Dunn emphasized the importance of neutralizing rogue drones but acknowledged the risks. Shooting down drones, for example, could endanger the public with falling debris. Alternatively, advanced counter-drone technologies could disable drones mid-flight without destroying them.
“You can zap it with a non-kinetic means,” Dunn explained. “It wipes out their electricity, and it makes them land or crash in a controlled way.”
Such capabilities would be crucial to preventing potential disasters while preserving evidence for investigation.
Despite these warnings, the Biden administration and federal agencies appear dismissive of the public’s concerns. In a joint statement, the Defense Department, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), FBI, and Department of Homeland Security minimized the significance of the drone sightings.
“Having closely examined the technical data and tips from concerned citizens, we assess that the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones,” the agencies stated.
They further claimed, “We have not identified anything anomalous and do not assess the activity to date to present a national security or public safety risk over the civilian airspace in New Jersey or other states in the northeast.”
Acknowledging public unease, federal agencies urged Congress to pass expanded counter-drone legislation. Such laws would grant local authorities broader authority to detect and mitigate drone threats.
The statement also addressed drone sightings over military facilities, emphasizing that the Department of Defense takes unauthorized access seriously. “Local commanders are actively engaged to ensure there are appropriate detection and mitigation measures in place,” the agencies noted.
While the administration seeks to reassure the public, experts like Dunn warn that these incidents expose deeper national security vulnerabilities. Whether used for surveillance or more sinister purposes, the drones demonstrate the limitations of U.S. airspace defenses and signal potential opportunities for adversaries.
Dunn’s concerns highlight a critical need for enhanced detection and mitigation technologies, robust legislative action, and stronger coordination among federal, state, and local authorities. As he put it, “We cannot afford to let these drones roam freely and leave the message that we’re unprepared to defend our airspace.”
The mysterious drones may not yet have caused harm, but they serve as a stark reminder of the evolving threats in modern warfare—and the urgency to address them before it’s too late.
