Long-term Android support has become a bigger deal than ever, and that matters whether you buy new or pick up a phone secondhand. Security patches protect your data, but the real win is getting fresh software features for years instead of watching your device age out too soon. A few Android phones now stand out because they can keep receiving updates through 2030 and even beyond.
Samsung is one of the clearest examples of how fast the update game has changed. Starting with newer devices, the company moved to seven years of OS updates and seven years of security support, which is a huge leap from its earlier policy. That means the Galaxy S24 line, which launched in 2024, is covered well into 2030, and some models later in the lineup are also set up for a long run.
The timing matters here, because 2024 is basically the dividing line for Samsung’s best update promises. Phones like the Galaxy S23 do not get the same runway, so older buyers need to be careful if they want a handset that can stay useful for the long haul. If you are shopping used, that support window can be the difference between a smart purchase and a phone that feels outdated almost immediately.
Google’s Pixel 8 is another easy phone to point to when talking about endurance. Google pushed its support policy hard with the Pixel 8 launch, promising seven years of updates starting from the device’s first availability on the Google Store in the U.S. That puts the Pixel 8 and anything newer on track for a 2030 finish line or later, depending on the model.
There is a nice simplicity to Google’s approach, too. If the phone has an 8 in the name or a higher number, you can expect it to stay current for a long while without having to decode a bunch of fine print. The catch is that the support clock ends for both software and security at the same time, so stretching one without the other is not really part of the deal.
Nothing and Motorola are in a more interesting spot, because their timelines are not as broad across the whole lineup. Nothing’s Phone 3 is the standout here, with five years of software updates and seven years of security updates, which gets it to 2030 for operating system support. That is especially notable because some newer Nothing models offer less software longevity even if security support lingers a bit longer.
Motorola’s Signature is the wild card, and it shows how uneven the Android world still is. It is newer and should have a longer future in theory, but Motorola’s update information is not nearly as straightforward as Samsung’s or Google’s. The company’s software upgrade page gives some guidance, yet it does not spell out a clean end-of-life date the way buyers would probably like.
That leaves other brands in a pretty mixed position. OnePlus is more transparent than some, but its phones are still generally limited to four years of software updates and five years of security patches, which is fine but not exactly future-proof compared with the big winners here. If you are hoping to ride a phone all the way to 2030, that shorter runway makes a real difference.
Oppo and Xiaomi bring even more uncertainty to the table, mostly because their official support details can be thin or narrowly focused. Xiaomi, for example, often emphasizes security coverage but typically does not make a strong promise that would carry most users to the end of the decade. For buyers who care about getting the most life out of a phone, that kind of vague commitment can be a dealbreaker.
So if your goal is simple, it comes down to this: look for the brands that are making clear, long-term promises instead of hoping support will magically stretch out. Samsung’s newer Galaxy phones, Google’s Pixel 8 family, and a few standout models from Nothing and Motorola are the ones that give Android buyers the most confidence. In a market full of short upgrade windows, that kind of breathing room is hard to ignore.
