Lt. Gov. Under Scrutiny as Georgia State Prosecutor Digs into Fani Willis Disqualification

This past week, the Washington Examiner reported that a state prosecutor has been assigned to investigate Georgia Republican Lt. Gov. Burt Jones’ conduct after the 2020 election.

This decision comes more than two years after Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis was deemed ineligible to handle the case due to attending a fundraiser for Jones’ Democratic opponent, Charlie Bailey.

In July 2022, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney granted Jones’ request to exclude Willis from the investigation, citing concerns about her impartiality.

McBurney agreed with that reasoning, stating, “An investigation of this significance, garnering the public attention it necessarily does and touching so many political nerves in our society, cannot be burdened by legitimate doubts about the District Attorney’s motives.”

“The District Attorney does not have to be apolitical, but her investigations do. The Bailey fundraiser she sponsored — in her official capacity — makes that impossible when it comes to investigating Bailey’s direct political opponent,” he continued.

“Any decision the District Attorney makes about Senator Jones in connection with the grand jury investigation is necessarily infected by it,” the judge went on to add.

The Examiner reported on Thursday that Peter Skandalakis, the executive director of the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council of Georgia, will oversee Jones’ investigation.

In a statement to the Examiner, Jones expressed anticipation for a prompt resolution to the issue.

The lieutenant governor went on to slam Willis for having “made a mockery of this legal process,” adding, “I’m happy to see this process move forward and look forward to the opportunity to get this charade behind me.”

“During our review of the award to respond to this inquiry, we have noticed some inconsistencies in what Fulton County has reported to [the Federal Subaward Reporting System] and we are working with them to update their reporting accordingly,” a Justice Department spokeswoman was quoted as saying.
