Hegseth Orders 20 Percent Cut To Pentagon Generals, Admirals

War Secretary Pete Hegseth is set to roll out a sharp new cut to the number of general and admiral positions, signaling another big step in his push to trim the top of the Pentagon. The move is expected to land during his State of the Force address, where senior military leadership and the direction of the force will be front and center.

The plan calls for reducing the number of billets reserved for generals and admirals by 20%, a bigger hit than the 10% reduction he ordered last year. According to internal memos, the Army, Navy, Air Force, and the joint staff have already been told to put the changes in place, with the deadline set for Jan. 1, 2027.

This is not just a numbers game. Hegseth has made it clear that he wants a leaner senior structure, one that pushes authority closer to the troops and cuts down on what he sees as thick layers of bureaucracy. His argument is simple: fewer stars at the top should mean more focus on the people doing the actual fighting.

The latest plan also makes a key distinction that matters inside the building. It targets billets, not a direct wipeout of 20% of the officers currently wearing those ranks, and some jobs are expected to be downgraded instead of erased.

That means some general and flag officer roles could be converted to O-6 level positions, which would open the door for colonels and Navy captains to step into places that once sat higher up the ladder. In practice, that could reshape how leadership is spread across the services without forcing every current senior officer out the door.

Hegseth has been talking this way for months, framing the effort as part of a broader cleanup of the military’s command structure. He previously described the plan as “less generals, more GIs,” a phrase that captures the tone of the whole campaign and the pressure he has put on the Pentagon to move faster and flatter.

The upcoming address lands exactly one year after he gathered hundreds of generals and admirals in Quantico, Virginia, for a rare and forceful meeting. That event set the stage for a tougher approach to senior leadership, with Hegseth warning officers who could not get behind the reforms that they should step aside.

He has also argued that trimming the top ranks should not be treated like a punishment. “This is not a slash-and-burn exercise meant to punish high-ranking officers,” Hegseth said when he announced the earlier reductions in May 2025. “This has been a deliberative process, working with the Joint Chiefs of Staff with one goal: maximizing strategic readiness and operational effectiveness by making prudent reductions in the general and flag officer ranks.”

The latest round of changes also comes with a different kind of spotlight on the event itself. Commands have reportedly been asked to send service members who meet fitness, body-composition, grooming, and uniform standards, which gives the gathering a more polished, high-expectation feel than a typical Pentagon briefing.

Some of those selected are even expected to take part in a workout with Hegseth, adding a very physical edge to a message that has already been built around discipline and accountability. The whole thing fits the same pattern he has been pushing from the start, with less ceremony at the top and more emphasis on toughness, standards, and command clarity.
