March On Washington Attendees Back Socialist Reforms And Constitution Rewrite

At a large Washington rally, attendees made a striking case for deep political overhaul, even when the conversation turned to the Constitution itself. Their comments lined up with a broader wave of socialist-leaning energy, with some participants openly praising the kind of agenda associated with Zohran Mamdani and other DSA-backed figures.

Supporters at the event did not shy away from bold talk. One attendee, Sravya from Washington, D.C., said she would favor “abolishing [the Constitution], rewriting it, including people’s voices that haven’t been included on there as well,” and also called for rewriting “all the oppressive amendments” she believed harmed marginalized people.

The gathering, held at the Lincoln Memorial, marked the 63rd anniversary of the original March on Washington and was organized by Rev. Al Sharpton’s National Action Network. While the event centered on voting rights and civil-rights themes, it also became a stage for bigger questions about whether America’s political framework itself should be torn down and rebuilt.

That question landed with real force when attendees were asked whether the Senate should stay in place. Sravya said “I think so,” when pressed on abolition, though she quickly added that it might need to be reconstructed from the ground up because of “systemic reform.”

Another marcher, Darius from Maryland, was even more blunt, saying, “I’m in full support of abolition of the colonial structures that cause terror to all marginalized and oppressed people.” The tone across the crowd suggested that, for many there, reform was not enough and the appetite was for something far more sweeping.

Some of the energy also pointed directly toward the newer face of democratic socialism in New York. Attendees spoke favorably about policies linked to Mamdani, and several said they would like to see that kind of politics catch on in their own communities.

Democratic leaders including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Sen. Bernie Sanders also appeared at the event, reinforcing the sense that this was more than a protest. It looked like a gathering where activists and political leaders were trying to keep the left’s momentum alive heading into the midterms.

That momentum matters because DSA-backed candidates have been knocking off establishment Democrats in primaries from Colorado and New York to Pennsylvania and Michigan. The victories have given socialist organizers more confidence, and the crowd in Washington reflected that energy in a very direct way.

Kassandra, from Ann Arbor, Michigan, said she would like to see her state move in the direction of Mamdani’s New York. A former volunteer for Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, she highlighted universal health care, unions and reducing the influence of money in politics as priorities.

She also argued that some socialist-leaning ideas have already shown their value in the past, though she did not point to a specific example when asked. Her comments captured the mix of idealism and vagueness that often surrounds these debates, where the promises are loud but the details can stay blurry.

Across the crowd, the argument kept circling back to power, fairness and who gets to shape public life. For supporters of this movement, the appeal is easy to spot: a break from old institutions, stronger labor politics, and a government that sounds more like the activists themselves.

Still, the sharper the calls for sweeping reform get, the more the public is forced to confront the real question underneath all of it. When people start talking about rewriting the Constitution, abolishing the Senate, and bringing a city-based socialist agenda home, the whole debate stops being abstract and starts sounding like a race to redefine the country in real time.
