Dr. Anthony Fauci has turned down a voluntary appearance before a second Senate panel, keeping the fight over COVID-era decisions very much alive. The move adds fresh fuel to Republicans who have spent months pressing hard on how the federal government handled the pandemic, what was known, and who should answer for it.
Fauci’s attorney pushed back on Sen. Ron Johnson’s request, saying another round of testimony would amount to political harassment. That argument lands in the middle of a tense standoff, with Senate Republicans saying the public still deserves straight answers about vaccine policy, research funding, and the broader pandemic response.
The refusal comes right after a bruising July hearing in which Fauci repeatedly declined to answer questions by invoking the Fifth Amendment more than 100 times. That hearing already put him at the center of a high-stakes clash, and the latest decision only deepens the pressure around what lawmakers believe he still knows.
Johnson, who leads the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, has been running a separate probe into the federal response to COVID-19. His inquiry has also focused on the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines, a subject that continues to stir debate among lawmakers and the public alike.
The contempt vote against Fauci was pushed through by Republicans on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee along party lines. Chairman Rand Paul has been especially aggressive, arguing that the committee should take the referral straight to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington instead of waiting for a full Senate vote.
Paul has also raised the bigger legal question sitting underneath the whole fight: whether Fauci can still claim Fifth Amendment protection after receiving a preemptive pardon from former President Joe Biden. Fauci and his legal team say that position is wrong, and that split leaves the issue simmering with no easy resolution in sight.
That legal wrangling is not happening in a vacuum. Paul has spent years pressing Fauci over his role in federal pandemic policy and has accused him of backing dangerous research tied to the origins of the virus. In Paul’s view, the paper trail and the testimony gaps are too serious to ignore.
Johnson’s panel has also gathered a growing stack of records connected to Fauci and the government’s pandemic response. Reports have pointed to documents from the Department of Health and Human Services, including a copy of Fauci’s pandemic-era cellphone, along with more than 1,000 pages of his personal diary that were turned over before the July hearing.
Those materials have added another layer to the investigation, giving lawmakers more to sift through as they try to piece together what happened behind the scenes. The atmosphere around the probe remains blunt and combative, with Republicans treating the issue as unfinished business rather than a closed chapter.
There is still uncertainty over what comes next if Johnson decides to escalate further. A subpoena would force a new legal showdown, while a refusal would almost certainly keep the fight alive inside Congress and across the wider debate over the pandemic response.
