Trump was speaking at the Nassau County Police Academy on Long Island when he brought up the Bronx boy, who was killed by a stray bullet late last month while sitting on his bike outside a bodega. The mention immediately shifted the room from policy talk to something far more painful and personal.
As he spoke about crime and repeat offenders, Trump said he believed Freytes’ family was present. He then stepped away from the microphone and walked over to embrace the boy’s mother, Migdalia Martinez, and his father, retired NYPD Sgt. Jesus Freytes.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt later described the moment as an “immpromptu” display of compassion and shared video of the scene. The exchange was brief, but it landed hard because it carried the weight of a story many families fear but never expect to live through.
Trump told the audience, “Two weeks ago, a 12-year-old boy named Jacob Freytes — You read about this one? — was tragically shot and killed by a stray bullet fired by a repeat offender in a gun battle.”
He added, “Jacob was the son of a loving mom and a retired New York City police detective, and they are incredible people, and I think I heard that they may be with us today. Are you with us?” Then he left the stage and hugged both parents before returning to continue his remarks.
Once back at the podium, Trump called the story “Incredible. Horrible story. What a horrible thing,” before saying, “But we’re going after them. These are bad, sick people.” The crowd was left with a stark reminder that crime statistics are not abstract when the victims are children and the families are standing right there.
Freytes’ killing has already fueled a political response in New York, where Republicans have pushed “Jacob’s Law” to impose tougher penalties when reckless criminal conduct leads to a child’s death. The proposal taps into a broader frustration that violent repeat offenders often keep cycling through the system until somebody innocent pays the price.
Martinez later described the moment before her son was shot in heartbreaking detail during an interview. “I gave him a kiss, and I walked out, and we always do a little dolphin kiss. And I walked out and went to work,” she said.
“Around five o’clock, they called me and said that he had gotten shot. And all I could do was try to think of different ways to get here faster,” she added. “When I got there, I just seen my boy gone.”
Police said William Ferrer, 45, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, along with several other counts. He has pleaded not guilty, and investigators say he had a long record that stretched back more than 25 years, including previous arrests for drunk driving, drug possession, menacing, and criminal contempt.
The details around the case only sharpen the anger surrounding Freytes’ death. A child was killed by a bullet that was never meant for him, in a city where too many people already feel like the rules keep bending in favor of the same familiar troublemakers.
