Florida Republicans are turning up the pressure on Rep. Cory Mills as a nasty primary fight spills into the open. Two GOP allies are now backing his challenger, and the move adds more fuel to an already messy race shaped by investigations, party nerves, and a wider push to protect vulnerable House seats.
Reps. Mike Haridopolos and Anna Paulina Luna have lined up behind former sports reporter Ryan Elijah, arguing he is the better bet for Florida’s 7th District. Haridopolos said, “Ryan Elijah is an excellent candidate and will ensure victory for us in Florida 7,” while the pair urged other Republicans to get on board.
Mills is running with a cloud hanging over him. He has faced multiple allegations involving finances and domestic abuse, along with scrutiny from both the House Ethics Committee and the Justice Department, though he has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
The tension is especially awkward because President Donald Trump has endorsed Haridopolos, Luna and Mills for re-election. That kind of split-level support has not stopped the knives from coming out, and it has made the Florida race a fresh reminder that party loyalty can run out fast when political risk starts climbing.
Republicans are feeling the heat for a bigger reason too. The House map is tight, and every shaky district matters when control of Congress is on the line during the second half of Trump’s term. In a seat like Mills’, even a small dip in confidence can turn into a real headache by November.
The district’s numbers have already raised eyebrows. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report moved the seat from “Solid R” to “Likely R” earlier this year, which is the kind of downgrade that makes party strategists start checking the math twice. With an R+5 lean, the race is still red, but not red enough to ignore if the cycle gets rough.
Mills has tried to knock down the DOJ chatter as just another attack from people trying to derail him. He called the reports a “desperate lie” and later wrote on X, “We are not aware of any DOJ investigation, nor has there been any confirmation of such investigation by DOJ or FBI, and would fully cooperate if there was one.”
That blunt response has not quieted the pressure. One GOP source said some Florida Republicans were already worried about whether Mills could hold the seat if he limped through the primary, especially with Democrats eager to turn his problems into a campaign issue.
The Florida clash is not happening in isolation. Republicans across the country are dealing with their own ugly candidate problems, and the list keeps growing at the worst possible time. In North Carolina, Rep. Chuck Edwards has dropped his re-election bid after a report detailed sexual harassment accusations from two young female staffers.
In Ohio, Rep. Max Miller is also under fire after accusations from his ex-wife and former father-in-law, Sen. Bernie Moreno, prompted calls from some Republicans for him to step aside. Miller has denied the accusations, asked for a House Ethics Committee review, and said he plans to keep fighting for reelection.
For party leaders, the message is simple and uncomfortable: weak spots do not stay hidden for long. One House Republican described the situation in brutally plain language, saying, “We must lead by example.”
That sentiment hangs over Mills as his primary debate approaches Wednesday night. The race has turned into more than a local contest, with Florida Republicans openly weighing whether the safer move is to stick with the incumbent or back a fresh face before the whole thing gets any uglier.
