Rashida Tlaib just locked up another Democratic primary win in Michigan, keeping her on track for a fifth term and giving the party’s far-left flank another loud win to brag about. The result fits a broader pattern that has been building for years, with DSA-backed candidates and other hard-left contenders making real gains in primaries across the country.
Tlaib beat Michigan state lawmaker Shanelle Jackson and Inkster Mayor Byron Nolen to secure the 12th Congressional District nomination. That keeps one of Congress’ most combative progressives firmly in the spotlight, while the Democratic Party keeps wrestling with how much room it wants to give candidates like her.
When Tlaib and the rest of the Squad entered the House in 2019, they were already known for pushing ideas well outside the old Democratic lane. Tlaib and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stood out in particular because of their ties to the Democratic Socialists of America, a label that once sounded fringe and now feels a lot more plugged into the party’s machinery.
That shift has not slowed down. The DSA has once again thrown its weight behind Tlaib, signaling that her brand of politics is not just surviving, but staying front and center in the progressive playbook.
“For years, Rashida has been a strong voice in the halls of the Capitol, unapologetically standing up for the working class everywhere. Fighting for affordable housing, for clean air and water, for an end to the genocide in Gaza, and so much more – Rashida is a beacon of hope and courage for those in her district and across the world,” the group said
The bigger story is how many other insurgent candidates are now winning where establishment Democrats used to feel safe. In New York, socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier beat incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat, and in Colorado, Melat Kiros took out longtime Rep. Diana DeGette, showing that these challenges are no longer isolated stunts.
That kind of primary turbulence has changed the conversation inside the party. Instead of a clean, predictable path for the old guard, Democrats are now dealing with a louder, more organized left wing that believes it can define the future rather than just complain from the sidelines.
The party has been here before, though. After weak showings in 2020, Democrats spent plenty of time blaming one another for sinking margins and missed opportunities, and the argument over how far left the party should go got even uglier.
“Don’t say socialism ever again. We need to get back to the basics,” then-Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., said at the time.
Progressives did not back down. Tlaib and others pushed the idea that the party needed to lean into a multiracial, working-class coalition instead of running away from the activists energized by Medicare for All, climate politics, and anti-establishment messaging.
“We need a new generation of leadership grounded in a multiracial, working-class experience and background,” the memo urged.

“As we speak, congressional Democrats are debating why they underperformed and some have been quick to blame progressives. There is no denying Republicans levied salient rhetorical attacks against Democrats, but these will continue to happen as they do every cycle.”
