12 Military Vehicles Civilians Can Own And Drive Today

Some military machines fade into history, but a surprising number live on in civilian hands. From rugged utility rigs to Cold War iron and rare warbirds, these vehicles still draw collectors who want the real thing, not a replica or a museum piece. The appeal is simple: power, history, and a little bit of controlled chaos rolled into one.

The Humvee is often the first name that comes up, and for good reason. The AM General HMMWV built its reputation on toughness and versatility, then became a cult favorite far beyond the battlefield. It is one of those vehicles that looks ready for anything, and the used market still turns up plenty of examples for buyers willing to do some digging.

Older icons carry a different kind of weight. The Willys MB, the original wartime Jeep, is still a giant in the collector world because it defined off-road utility long before that became a marketing buzzword. The M4 Sherman Tank sits on the opposite end of the scale, massive and expensive, but it remains one of the most recognizable armored vehicles ever built.

Aircraft bring a different kind of thrill, especially when they are tied to major wartime legends. The North American P-51 Mustang is still prized because it combines elegant lines with genuine combat pedigree, and many surviving examples are restored to flying condition by serious enthusiasts. The McDonnell Douglas F4 Phantom II pushes that excitement into jet age territory, with speed, noise, and a reputation that still commands attention wherever it appears.

Not every military vehicle that survives is meant to scream across a runway or thunder down a road. The Patrol Torpedo Boat and the Whiskey-class submarine show how deep the collector market can go when sea power enters the picture. One is fast and lean, built for wartime raids, while the other is a steel relic of the Cold War that still carries a serious mystique.

Amphibious and armored vehicles also have a huge following because they offer a weird, satisfying mix of fun and intimidation. The GMC DUKW, better known as the Duck, can handle land and water, which makes it one of the most unusual military vehicles civilians can own. The FV432 Armored Personnel Carrier and the T-72 Main Battle Tank lean heavily into brute force, and even when stripped of battlefield use, they still feel larger than life.

There are also newer options that show how military design has evolved. The Embraer EMB 312 T-27 Tucano and the Oshkosh L-ATV are proof that civilian ownership is not limited to rusted relics from World War II or the Cold War. The Tucano carries the appeal of a trainer aircraft with real military roots, while the L-ATV represents modern protection and mobility in a package that still feels straight out of a deployment zone.

What makes this market so magnetic is the strange balance between practicality and fantasy. Some buyers want something they can actually drive, others want a restoration project, and a few want the kind of machine that turns heads before it even starts up. The result is a world where history does not sit still, and the right collector can still take the wheel, climb aboard, or taxi onto the tarmac with a piece of it.
