Fever Cut Off Reporter, Sophie Cunningham Questions End Press Conference

The Indiana Fever’s postgame media session took a sharp turn after their 112-98 win over Portland, with team staff quickly shutting down a question about Sophie Cunningham and cutting the exchange off before it could go anywhere. What should have been a routine podium session instead turned into a brief flashpoint, and the team’s own video version of the press conference left that moment out entirely.

Aliyah Boston had already been asked about the outside attention the team has dealt with, and her response stayed focused on basketball, team chemistry, and keeping the noise out of the locker room. She made it clear the Fever are trying to stay locked in on winning games and handling the pressure that comes with being one of the league’s most watched teams.

“Yeah, I think first of all that’s what we build with who we have coming in. We know that there is always going to be attention with the Fever and for us it’s about coming in and winning games. It’s about showing up and doing what we can to continue to take steps forward in this league, and I think there is always going to be outside noise,” Boston said.

“But I think we’ve been professionals long enough to know that if you let that affect you then you’re not really here for the right things, so for us we just keep the main thing the main thing, and that’s hoop.”

Right after that, a reporter tried to shift the conversation toward Cunningham’s recent comments on trans athletes and the broader debate surrounding women’s sports. That’s when the tone changed fast, with the team’s public relations staff stepping in almost immediately to shut the door on the question.

“We’re going to wrap up here,” a Fever representative said.

Boston then thanked the media and headed out, ending the session without any follow-up on the Cunningham topic. The team’s posted YouTube version stopped at Boston’s answer and skipped the exchange that followed, which made the interruption stand out even more.

The moment landed in the middle of another strong stretch for Indiana, which has been piling up wins and drawing plenty of attention along the way. Boston’s comments reflected the mindset the Fever keep trying to sell: keep the focus on the court, keep the locker room steady, and don’t let the chatter take over the day.

Cunningham has been at the center of a bigger conversation around the women’s sports debate, and that backdrop has kept the Fever in a spotlight they did not exactly ask for. The questions around her have now spilled into the public side of the team’s media obligations, where one awkward pause can turn into a talking point all its own.

That was especially noticeable with Caitlin Clark, who was not made available after recording the fourth triple-double of her career in the win. It was also the second straight game she was not made accessible to reporters, adding another layer to a night that already had enough attention wrapped around it.

Outside the arena, supporters gathered for a second game in a row to show support for Cunningham and the position she has taken. Inside, the Fever kept things tight, stayed quiet on the topic, and moved the conversation back to basketball, even as the surrounding debate kept humming in the background.
