Anthony Rizzo Says Netflix Derby Could Expand MLB Reach

MLB’s midsummer showcase is getting a fresh boost this year, and Anthony Rizzo thinks that matters a lot. With the Home Run Derby landing in Philadelphia and streaming on Netflix, the event has a chance to pull in people who might not normally sit down for baseball, which is exactly the kind of attention the sport wants. Rizzo says the mix of big names, big swings, and big exposure gives the All-Star week a kind of energy that other leagues would love to copy.

The timing helps, too, because the league is right at that unofficial halfway mark when fans start sizing up contenders and star power. The Derby always has a little extra juice, but the streaming setup makes this one feel bigger than a normal summer night. Rizzo likes that baseball is getting shown on a platform that can put the sport in front of a wider, more casual audience.

“It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be really exciting. What they’re doing to our sport, getting basically worldwide recognition. Fans that maybe aren’t interested in baseball see that it’s on Netflix and think, ‘Hey, I’m gonna watch this.’ So, we have a really good opportunity to bring baseball to viewers that don’t necessarily see it on a daily basis,” he said.

That kind of reach is part of what makes the All-Star festivities feel special. Baseball does not always get the same kind of viral splash as other sports, but the Derby gives it a shot to break out of the usual crowd and land in living rooms that might be scrolling for something else. If the right players catch fire, that could turn a one-night event into a real conversation piece.

Rizzo also likes the star treatment around the event, especially when the league rolls out the full package. “They bring stardom everywhere. Everything they do, Netflix is first class. So, I’m excited for the guests we’re going to have on, the baseball players, the celebrities, the whole shebang.” It is the kind of answer that sounds like someone who knows the grind of the season, but still appreciates a little spectacle when the game calendar calls for it.

Even with all the showbiz around it, the competition itself is still serious in its own way. Rizzo pointed out that once the players step between the lines, the laid-back vibe fades fast and everybody wants to put on a show. That means hard contact, big moments, and the kind of pressure that turns a fun exhibition into a bragging-rights contest.

“I think when you get between the lines, it’s all fun and games until the game starts. It’s still relaxed and fun, but when you’re in the box or on defense, it’s very competitive. You want to take the guy deep, you want to get a hit, you want to showcase your All-Star talent on the national stage. If you get out, it doesn’t matter as much. If you get a hit, it doesn’t matter as much. But it feels good to perform at the All-Star Game,” Rizzo said.

That edge is part of what separates baseball’s showcase from some other sports’ all-star weekends. In other leagues, the stars sometimes treat the event like a warm-up or skip the flashy parts altogether, but the Derby still tends to draw real participants who want the spotlight. The workload is brutal, though, and Rizzo knows firsthand how much it takes out of a player.

“I’ve done the Derby myself, and I was sore for a week afterward just because of how hard I was swinging. So, you’ve really got to assess where you’re at physically and mentally. It’s mentally grueling, too. The magnitude and the emotion that go into the Derby and the All-Star Game are intense, and then two days later you’re back playing. So, you’ve just got to know yourself,” he said.

This year’s field has the kind of names that can make the whole thing pop. Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Junior Caminero, and Ben Rice are among the sluggers set to take their hacks, and that gives the event a nice mix of established stars and fresh faces. The format is simple enough for casual fans to follow, but the pressure of 20 swings per round can turn it into pure chaos in a hurry.

Rizzo thinks that chaos is part of the fun, especially when the sport gets an adrenaline spike it does not usually get in July. He also likes that the Derby can shine a light on younger players who are still building their name. The money on the line only adds to the drama, because a few minutes of mash can turn into a life-changing payday.

Then there is Philadelphia itself, which Rizzo sees as the right backdrop for a week like this. The city has baseball energy, the Phillies are rolling again, and the whole place feels primed for a loud summer celebration. Throw in the All-Star Game, a packed Derby night, and a crowd hungry for something memorable, and it is easy to see why Rizzo expects the atmosphere to be electric.
